I turn to see the office and I feel a bit of nostalgia because it has been my last day in it. I still remember perfectly the first case we had here and everything I had to go through to be where I am now.
When I was little, my dream was to be a police officer like my father and when they told me he was dead, that dream became number one on my list of things to do. However, when I found the letter in my mother's room, the letter in which my father told my mother in detail how he had found someone else and that he was not going to return, I decided to leave that dream behind. My father was alive with another woman, that was the day when I didn't see the point of becoming an officer.
But when I entered the academy at nineteen, I realized that I wasted my time in Illinois studying something I had never liked, and I thanked the universe for putting Hank Voight on my way.
That's one of the reasons why it's so hard for me to leave this place, I feel I owe my life to that man, that man who became my sergeant.
"Nobody's forcing you to leave." Voight's voice comes out of his office, I'm standing between the desks still watching everything from there.
I turn to him with a smile and I feel my eyes begin to fill with tears.
"I don't know how to thank you for everything you've done for me," I say shaking my head. He approaches me a little. "You were like my dad all this time... well, better..."
Hank smiles lightly.
"Do you remember the day I took you to my apartment?" He asks me, I let out a small laugh, I nod with no need to do it. He knows that I remember that very well. "I had been following you for a couple of days, I didn't know who you were... I just knew that I could do something for you."
"And I'll always thank you," I say honestly. "Everyone knows the violent sergeant Hank Voight, but just a few know the fatherly side you have... and I'm glad to be one of those..."
"Oh c'mon!" He says laughing and I do it as well. "Don't let the criminals hear you"
"Thank you for everything, Hank..."
"Don't say goodbye... it's not the last time we're going to see each other."
I smile waiting for that to be true.
"Let's go it's too late," he says, shaking his head.
I nod, take the box in which are all my things and take a last look at the place stopping a little more on Adam's desk.
I will definitely miss this.
"Prepare your ears," Voight tells me before being at the first floor.
I confused a little and gave him a look. When I pass the security door I hear several roars causing me to jump for taking myself off guard.
When I look up, there are confetti and streamers falling everywhere, a few seconds later I hear several people shout a word that I don't understand because of the surprise that I had.
I see a flash making my eyes to close and I hear the laughter of some people in there.
"Your boyfriend organized it and nobody objected," Voight says, placing his hands on my shoulders.
I turn to see Adam and he smiles at me while pointing to the cake on Trudy's desk. I laugh a little at the smiles of everyone.
"Thank you guys," I say as I go down the last steps.
