My mother always liked Adam, but if I gave her a choice, she would choose Rafael. Since we were kids, she always say that and now that she knows that Adam and I are no longer together, she has suggested talking to "Rafi".
"Mother, Rafael is like another Armando for me," I say as I finish drying the dishes we use for dinner.
"I know," she replies with a laugh. "But there is no blood involved; you have known each other for so many years... I only say that you should think about it... you know what happened with Alex and Yelina..."
"They liked each other since they were children and ended up marrying?" I ask turning to see her.
"Alex was in love with you, not with Yelina"
I shake my head because I know I won't be able to change her mind. I know she knows it deep inside, but she likes to bother me with it 'cause as she said: She doesn't want me to be left alone. Even so, I think it was a bad idea to tell her that Rafael and I started working together.
I had started with the move a few days ago; my mother and my brother have been helping me even though I haven't spent a night there yet. Apparently, my mother is not in a hurry for me to leave her house, she says that I went so young to Chicago and I didn't come back until now.
And it's 'cause she had the idea that I would go to study for four years and I would go back to New York, instead, I went to the academy and didn't come to New York very often for eleven years.
"How went everything with Zara?" I ask to Nick.
Nick had offered to help me with my apartment again, so here we are, painting some walls since I didn't like the color of them.
"Good," he says with a smile. "I took the captain's advice and took her to the zoo; she was fascinated with everything she saw... they let her pet a monkey and she wanted to take him home..."
We both laugh about it,
"And Maria's parents hate me more every day," he says ironically.
"Why would they hate you?"
"I don't know what she told them." He shakes his head and climbs onto a bench to paint the fifteen inches closer to the ceiling. "But, we're not together anymore so I shouldn't care..."
"But they're still your daughter's grandparents..."
"Yes, but it's not like I've had a good relationship with them," he says with a shrug. "I've always been working, I rarely went to Washington when Maria and Zara went to visit them... but enough to talk about them, what did you want to be when you grew up, Vanessa? Let me guess, you wanted to be a mommy..."
"What?" I ask while he laughs. "Definitely not, and... why do you ask that?"
"Zara told me she wants to be a dancer and Maria told her no," Nick says as he sighs. "I want to know if it's just a phase or something..."
"Well, I never wanted to be a mommy" I answer with a smile what makes him laugh lightly "I always wanted to be at the police like my dad, my mother thought it was a phase because she didn't want me to be in the same world as my father, so she enrolled me in all the courses she found, first it was ballet which I didn't like. Then it was painting, I liked it but not to dedicate myself to it, my parents taught me to play piano and guitar... none of that made me stop wanting to be a detective, not even skating..."
