Where and how exactly I was born, I cannot say for sure. All I know is what the orphanage told me, that they found me after a land slide destroyed house, leaving me the only survivor. My name wasn't originally Mikaris..at that time, my barely legible and dust covered birth certificate said my name was Miyoko Misaka...an ordinary name in all respects.

I was a loner at the orphanage, I was the only girl who got her own room because the other girls in the dorm rooms would pick on me for being an esper. Ever since I was about 3, I had already become a level 1 Electromaster Esper, and while I could only generate small sparks, the other children had already been taught to fear espers as this was when Psychic City was already beginning it's takeover of the world.

I was constantly beaten by the other kids, boys and girls alike. They would throw rocks at me, and tell me that I should go to the circus where I belonged. Only one of the boys ever accepted me. A boy by the name of Touma...we didn't know his family name, as half his birth certificate was charred up in the fire that took his parent's lives after he was born.

Apparently from what little information they could tell, Touma's parents had been overly vocal about Psychic City's tyranny, and one of the first Divine Generals of that era, a pyrokinesist, had come to silence them.

Touma and I were inseperable. I still remember the conversations we would have when I was around 4.

"You know Miyoko." Touma would say. "I don't know what all the other kids babble on about, you're alright!"

"But.." I said as I generated a small spark on my finger. "I didn't think anybody would want to hang out with a freak.."

Touma grinned and put his right hand on my shoulder. I was surprised at that time to find that I couldn't use my ability. Touma let go, and immediately I was able to start generating sparks again.

"See?" said Touma. "We're both freaks! But that shouldn't let the rest of the world stop us! Don't you know that some of the greatest geniuses ever were considered freaks? Who knows? Years from now, everyone could be eating their own words! HAHAHA!"

"That sounds nice." I said.

Touma nodded enthusiastically. "Yep! But in order to be recognized for our genius, I think we should probably get cool aliases!! Like book writers!"

"Sorry, but I'm not good at coming up with names.." I said.

"I know..I'll come up with one for you!" Touma said. "Now let's see, you seem like a fighter, so we should put something that means hunting in your name...like Kari!

"Eh...I don't know about me being much of a strong type like that.."

"Oh..and Mi means beautiful..so we should definitely put something similar to that in there!"

That statement was perhaps the one that made me blush. I was lucky that Touma was so enthralled with making a name for me, or he might have noticed, and I would have been truly embarrassed indeed.

"And we should add an s...because it's the most elegant letter of the alphabet..I mean just look at the way it squiggles!! And the name we have is...Mikaris! Eh? What do you think!?"

I giggled. "I think it's wonderful!"

And so we lived together happily for around 4 years...but it all changed when I was 8. By then, the entire world was under the rule of Psychic City. While normally, only the youngest children at around 1 to 5 would be selected to be taken by the city, me and Touma were specially selected due to our already strange emerging powers.
