He avoided her eyes, knowing her team would be the least forgiving, which meant a lot because no team had been particularly ready to give him a free pass after destroying their guild hall. However, this was different. He had targeted the three of them, hurt her. He knew this sin would be harder to atone for. His awkward position made it clear to her that he was uncomfortable, and she smiled, glad he was making an effort.
It was late, and most other guild members were asleep, but he couldn't sleep. Guilt plagued his tired mind. That was how Gajeel found himself at Levy’s door at this late hour. But when he showed up, she understood.
“Do you want some tea?” she asked when he stood there awkwardly.
“Yeah, yeah that would be great,” he replied, relieved.
She smiled, opening the door wider as he walked in. Her one room apartment was fairly small, with a simple kitchen and a queen bed nearby, along with a living room area. He dismissed any idea of being close to that bed in the near future as she placed the kettle on the stove.
“It’s cozy,” he remarked as he sat at the small table.
“It's all I need, all my other money goes towards books and spells anyway. I don't need a large place,” she smiled.
Without thinking he mentioned, “so I guess that means you're single.”
Her face became a light pink as she sheepishly said, “Yeah, yeah I am.”
“I mean, I didn't mean anything by that, it ugh, I'll just shut up now before I say anything else to embarrass myself.” He grumbled the last statement to himself.
Levy giggled to herself, causing him to smile.
“She has a pretty cute laugh,” he thought to himself.
She placed the delicate china on the table, along with the tea bags required. He watched her finish making the tea in fascination.
“Haven't you ever seen anyone make tea before?” she asked.
“Well I haven't seen anyone as attractive as yourself make tea before,” he flirted.
She blushed as she handed him the cup. He held it carefully, worried that his strength would cause him to break it.
“Why did you come here Gajeel?” she asked, with a steel-hard tone, her playful nature gone as she sat down with her own tea.
“I guess I just came to say sorry. I know it's not even close to enough, but I couldn't sleep after remembering what I did to you and your team. I just feel as if I should make up for it.”
“Oh, well you're okay. That was last week. And you've saved me multiple times since then,” she replied sweetly.
“Really?” he replied optimistically, shocked by her reaction.
“Yeah, I mean everyone makes mistakes, and you've shown your loyalty to Fairy Tail. I don't think you'll betray us anytime soon.”
An overwhelming bliss filled his heart. He never knew anyone could be so forgiving, so kind. So he showed his gratitude one of the only ways he knew how. He leaned forward, resting his hand on her chin as he placed his lips on hers, gently. An apology wrapped in a kiss.
