The Kiss

She stood, not returning the kiss but not pulling away in protest. He backed off, assessing her response as he did so.

“Why did you do that?” she asked, a sense of confusion in her eyes. One second he's apologizing the next he's kissing her? Granted, she did enjoy it, but that didn't make it any less confusing.

“It was nothing, I just, I'm happy you would apologize. I don't know many people who are that forgiving,” he sighed deeply.

“That's cause you've spent way too many time with dark guilds. Forgiving isn't exactly in the job description,” she explained.

He chuckled, finding her assessment to be accurate.

“Hey, I have a question,” she asked nervously. He looked at her curiously, wondering what it could ever be. “Any way you could stay with me tonight?”

His face grew a deep red.

“Oh, no, not like that. I've just been having a hard time sleeping. After you attacked me I've just been more jumpy. It's kinda ironic how I'm asking you to help me, no offense or anything.”

“Why don't you ask the other guys in your team?” he asked.

“You mean Jet and Droy? They're not the most protective of people.”

“They sure seem protective of you,” Gajeel thought, knowing this was just some excuse. But he did owe her, so he went along with it.

“Sure,” he said nonchalantly.

“O-okay, you can sleep on the couch. I'm not quite sure if it's long enough for you, but it's softer than it looks,” she replied.

“I'm okay with anything, I'm the one that owes you.”

“Thank you for this. You don't know how much this means to me.”

“It's not a big deal. I'm all ready to go to bed anyway,” he replied.

“Perfect.”

She went to a small closet to grab a sheet and blankets as well as a few pillows, then started to make the bed before he stopped her. “I got this,” he said as he grabbed the sheet and tucked it into the cushion.

After Gajeel finished with the couch he sat down, resting as Levy walked out of the bathroom wearing only a tank top and shorts. He smiled to himself.

“I didn't ask you to stay so you could gawk,” she said, but her smile and flirtatious pose said otherwise. She stood, looking down at him as she rested her hand on her hip.

“I thought that was just a bonus,” he replied, smirking to himself.

She thwacked his arm playfully, smiling as she did so. She walked over to the bed, climbing in.  He observed as she grabbed her book and glasses off the nightstand, smiling in anticipation as she opened it up to the bookmarked page. He watched, transfixed as she lost herself among the pages.

After she realized he was staring, She asked, “what are you doing?”

“Well you asked me to keep an eye on you, didn't you?” he responded playfully.

She shrugged, turning back to her book.

He drifted off, waking up a few hours later when his body grew tired of sitting up. It took him a second to realize where he was, the sudden release from sleep affecting his muddled brain.

He looked over to see Levy fast asleep, her reading light still glowing brightly. Walking over to turn it off, he smiled to himself. Her book lay open on the blanket, her reading glasses crookedly perched on her nose. Drool trickled down her face as she snored slightly. He carefully placed the bookmark between the pages, closed the book and set it on the nightstand where it belonged. Then he meticulously removed the glasses from her face.

As he turned off the reading light, darkness flooded the room. He carefully tiptoed to the couch, making sure not to bump or trip on anything as he did so. He laid down, smiling to himself satisfyingly.
