The final bell had finally rung and the two girls rushed to their lockers, pushing anyone in their way, Riley almost falling as they came close to their destination.

Once they got their, they saw Lucas leaning against Riley's locker and she smiled. 'Hey Lukey.' She said as she went up to him and gave him a hug.

Maya rolled her eyes and smiled at him. 'Sup Huckleberry.' She said to him, acting as cool as possible. They took their heavy books out of their bags and put them in their lockers, relieved that the weight was finally gone.

Once they did, Maya grabbed her car keys and the three walked out of school together, walking towards the parking lot.

'Just follow us, okay?' Maya said to Lucas as he nodded his head and walked to his car. The two girls got in Maya's unlocked car and she started the engine.

Riley turned the radio on and flipped through the radio stations, complaining about how there's never any good music on.

Maya chuckled and stopped at the red light. 'Connect it to the Bluetooth and put on your music.' She said to her as Riley pulled out her phone and smiled at her.

'This is why I need you.'

The light turned green and Maya let go of the brake pedal, driving off into the same old neighborhoods they passed everyday.

A beep came from the speakers letting them know that a phone had been connected to the car and Riley put the volume up.

'Aw yeah!' Maya said as Ode To Sleep by Twenty Øne Piløts came on.

'I wake up fine and dandy but then by the time I find it handy to rip my heart apart and start-'

'-landing my crash landing I go-'

'UP UP UP UP UP TO THE CEILING', the two girls sang along together as their favorite part came on and Riley started dancing, waving her hands around and shaking her head.

Maya nodded her head to the rhythm and tapped her fingers on the steering wheel, singing along with Riley.

The girls finished the song with giggles and laughs. 'Remember when we went to go see them last year?' Maya said, reminiscing on one of the greatest weekends of her life.

Riley sighed and smiled, 'greatest weekend EVER'. She said, wishing she could go back and relive that day over and over again.

'Hometown was such an emotional song, remember the girl next to us, how hard she was crying and screaming the lyrics?' Maya said as she chuckled a little, remembering.

Riley blushed and looked over at Maya, embarrassed, 'that was me, May.' She said as Maya looked over at her and let out a loud laugh.

'Oh yeah!' She said to her as Riley covered her face, 'I wonder if Lucas likes Tyler and Josh.' She said as she turned into her street.

The girls continued talking all the way home, acting as if they weren't competing for the love a boy they had just met. They knew that none of that would get in the way of they're friendship.

'Well Lucas, welcome to my house. My mom is working at Riley's moms cafe late and my dads up in Philly till tomorrow so we have the house all to ourselves.' Maya said as the three walked inside.

The two walked into the kitchen and Lucas followed, sitting on one of the kitchen chairs, watching as they pulled out bread and peanut butter from the pantry, a routine the girls had mastered since the second grade.

'So how long have you two known eachother?' Lucas asked them as they put a plate in front of him and placed a sandwhich on it.

The girls grabbed their own and both sat in front of him and each took a bite.

'Too long to tell,' Riley said in between bites, 'we've been best friends since kindergarten. You do the math.' She said to him as Maya devoured her delicious food.

'Correction', Maya said cleaning her mouth with a napkin, 'Best friends since kindergarten'.

Lucas raised both his brows, impressed. 'Wow. And you guys never get tired of eachother?'

Maya and Riley looked at eachother and began laughing. Once they finished, Maya swiped a fake tear off her face and Riley cleaned her dry eyes with a napkin.

'Do you ever get tired of breathing?' Maya asked in a snarky tune.

Lucas chuckled and shook his head.

'Well then there you have it.' She said as she took another bite out of her bread.

The three continued talking for a while until their plates and cups were empty.

They moved over to the couch in the living room, Lucas sitting in a recliner as the two girls sat together on the love seat.

'These are cool pictures.' Lucas said as he examined the pictures behind him. He stood up and looked at a specific one: a very young Maya and her mother holding hands with a beautiful sunset behind them.

He noticed that the pictures seemed to have been ripped, there was another arm holding Maya's mothers hand.

'Why is this picture ripped?' Lucas asked her as she looked over to see what it was he was pointing too.

'Oh, yeah my mom ripped that when my biological dad, Kermit, ran off. She was gonna throw it away but my dad really liked it so he hung it up.'

'Oh okay. So the guy in Philly is your stepdad?' He asked as he sat back down, looking at the blonde who seemed nervous talking about this.

She bit her bottom lip and tucked a strand of her silky, blonde hair behind her hair. 'Mm no. He's my dad. Like yeah he's my stepdad', she said putting air quotes around the word stepdad, 'but he's my real dad to me.'

He looked closer at Maya and once again felt his heart go warm for her. What was it about this girl that he so easily could see himself falling for?
