Chapter 5- The Stare

"Erra Erra Ooooh!" the rooster called from outside Alessia's window. She peered her eyes opened and looked at the time. It was four in the morning and the sun was not to be seen. She rolled over and groaned slamming the pillow over her ears. No place like home alright. She thought as her eyes drifted back to sleep.

The sunlight hit Alessia's face like a spotlight beam. She tried to roll over and hide the sunlight from her face, but her drapes were flying open. She opened her eyes and sat up. Did I open my windows last night? She asked herself getting up and going towards the window. Gabriel was already out milking the goats like most mornings. Alessia helped milk the dairy goats on Tuesdays and Saturdays while Harriet helped Thursdays and Mondays. Gabriel helped milk them on Wednesdays and Sundays, but Sundays were preferably a day everyone took off. But the goats didn't seem to care if it was a weekend or not. They had to be milked. The schedule for the milking went well. Everyone did their share. Gabriel always seemed to do more though. He was a hard worker.

Alessia looked back at the window and took the drapes in her hands. She looked down at them then looked outside again. Letting go of the drapes she closed the window and saw some kind of a piece of paper. She picked it up. It read two words:

Kenna, eyes

She was confused, but then remembered Kenna was some lady that Derick worked for or something. And the word eyes, what did that mean? She was a bit boggled by the idea that someone could have snuck in her room. Then she sat on her bed. But I woke up at four this morning and the window was not opened. Someone must have snuck inside from four to... Alessia glanced over at the clock and then began pondering again. ...six. Why would someone come in here though? She wondered. Alessia got dressed and went downstairs. Harriet was cooking breakfast.

"Harriet, where is mom today?" Alessia asked taking some bacon from the counter.

"Hey! Don't eat like a pig! Mom is out to the farmers market today," Harriet said mixing pancake mix in a bowl.

"If you haven't noticed what I am eating is pig, so by saying I shouldn't eat like a pig is kind of ironic," Alessia said taking a bite into the greasy bacon.

"Not irony exactly," Harriet replied holding her nose in the air. She poured the pancake mix onto the stove as it began sizzling.

"Hey Harriet, did you happened to come through my window from like four to now, because my window was opened," Alessia asked holding the piece of paper behind her back.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Harriet said not turning to her.

"You know something! I can feel it!" Alessia said trying to make eye contact. Harriet knew she would read her mind so she dodged her eyes.

"No, I really don't know okay. Why would someone come through your window anyways?" Harriet said rolling her eyes.

"I don't know. Maybe if my window was the only one opened I guess," Alessia shrugged. "But I know you are hiding something!" Alessia said putting her hand on the counter.

"No I'm not! I swear!" Harriet said flipping the pancakes.

"If you aren't lying then look me in the eyes," Alessia said walking towards her trying to see her eyes.

"No, I'm not hiding anything but I don't want you reading my mind okay? You don't need to see my thoughts," Harriet said whipping her eyes.

"Why are you crying? I won't look at your eyes, just tell me," Alessia said more caring. Harriet took the pancakes off the stove and sat down at the table.
