(Jeff)

"What in the world are you talking about, Harley?" Averie asked, her jaw set and teeth clenched in anger.

"Oh, honey, did I really stutter? Here, let me dumb it down for you: I. Work. For. Your. Father." Harley said, taking a short pause after each word, widening her eyes, and speaking to Averie, as if she were in kindergarten. She enunciated each word clearly and crisply, allowing Averie to take short, ragged breaths in between.

"So you can take us to him?" I asked, hoping to relieve some of the tension.

"Of course I can, but I have a price. An eye for an eye, you know?" Harley said with a devilish grin.

"Why the hell would we help you?" Averie spat at her.

"Looks like you're going to have to find your father by yourself. Oh, I forgot to mention, since I'm his secretary, I decide his appointments," Harley said, getting close to Averie's face, so close that their noses almost touched, "and I have every right to deny you an appointment." Harley smiled cruelly.

Averie looked very taken aback by the situation, she stuttered trying to find the right word until I had to save her.

"Fine, where to?" I asked turning on the ignition.

"Actually, you guys miscalculated your location. He's in the uptown part, and it's kind of a long drive. You can stop by at a small motel here, it's getting late." Harley said polishing her already shiny nails.

"Fine." I muttered, driving off to find the nearest motel.

It took about five minutes to get to the motel and the entire time, both girls were deadly silent. I would turn on the radio and Harley would shut it off, complaining that I'm an "uncultured swine," and that I should listen to more Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber. Averie's breathing was incredibly shallow and her jawline set. Though her  hair covered most of her face, she held tightly onto her arm, indicating anger, or frustration.

Or both.

"Take a left here," Harley said, not even looking at the road. Her eyes were trained on her iPhone, thumbs twiddling away, "you can park here, I'll go get the room, because, you know, unlike some people," she coughed, "I have a job." And with a hair flip, and a wink, she was out the door and headed towards the office.

"Do you ever want to just violently strangle someone?" Averie asked, peering out the window, in the reflection, her blue eyes were narrowed and her teeth were clenched shut.

"I've given up my murderous ways," I said taking her hand in mine and looking at Harley through the office window, "but the feeling remains." I said with a small grin.

I kissed Averie's knuckles and she turned to look at me. A small smile had appeared on her face, and it was like looking at something beautiful. Like being free to run in an open field, like letting a butterfly land on me, its wings fluttering, softly brushing my skin. Averie was like being free. Averie felt so pure, so natural.
