We humans are creature of habits, and what you think today, is what you will think tomorrow, and from my current experience, I find that nail in the coffin true. Your character didn't become a crazy psycho killer in one day, your character didn't become super evil genius in one day, and if that were to be the case, then that is just simply unrealistic characters. And unrealistic characters lack depth, and the lacking depth part is pretty self explanatory. So when you think of your character's personality, first think of how they became this way. A backstory or flashbacks are optional in this case. But what is truly important is what comes after, and is the part that most writers (even professional ones) screw up on. It's STAYING IN CHARACTER. When you write a narrative from a certain character's view, doesn't matter if it's 1st or 3rd, remember to always stick to your character, don't think from your shoes, think the way that character will think. Think in the way how you would think if you had that character's personality, set of values, perspective...etc. And if you manage to do a fraction of this, I say you are better then half of the professional writers out there. And here is a little example of how you can incorporate mood and personality without describing it much, look closely at the action:
EG: IBT ch 19
"Bend those arms of yours fresh meat! Even my dead grandma could do better push ups then you!" Isa yelled, as she crossed her legs leisurely.
I would do better if you bitch weren't sitting on my back!
"Agrhhh!..." I let out a raspy breath, as I bent my arms and went down for another push up.
"BEND THOSE ARMS OR DO YOU WANT TO BECOME DEAD MEAT THAT BAD?" Isa yelled.
"Agrhhh!..." I said with one last dying breath before collapsing flat onto the ground.
"101 push ups in 2 min." Isa sneered as she pushes herself up with one hand using my back as support.
"5 min break. Once you are finished we are gonna move to hand to hand combat." Isa said with an contempt as cold as ice, before closing the fitness app on her Y-phone and walking away.
