Bilal 2012: Peace & Quiet

Bilal opens his front door and throws his keys into the key basket, which is kept on the table in the hall. He walks straight in to the kitchen, switches on the spot lights and has a glass of water. His silver double door fridge freezer is full of food, just the way he likes it.  He turns to look around the kitchen inspecting its cleanliness. He does this every time he comes home from work, it really irritates him, if he comes home and the kitchen is not as he expects it.

Bilal really likes his kitchen it is his favourite and also the largest room in the house. It’s warm and cosy with a rustic theme. All the cupboards are pale yellow in colour, chunky and old in style. The walls of the kitchen are painted a copper colour. One entire wall of the kitchen is floor to ceiling sliding glass doors with no frames to break up the view, of the grounds around the house.  The marble worktops are tan with little black flecks. There is a massive island which has a built in grill and a serving counter with six stools on the other side. All of the appliances in the kitchen are silver. There is a dining table that seats ten with a 52inch flat screen on the wall in front of it, there are two other smaller flat screens in the kitchen, one which can be seen from the island cooking area and one in the little nook. The nook is a place in the kitchen that is around the corner from the main part and has a working fireplace, large brown leather sofa and the third flat screen.

Bilal finishes his inspection of the kitchen, satisfied that everything is shiny, gleaming and smear free. He notices a plate of food left on the side with a post it note attached ‘For you, Mr Bazaar x’ it reads. He removes the note, unwraps the clingfilm and puts the plate in the microwave.  “Thanks be to God for my chef” he smiles to himself. He sits down at the table and switches on the flat screen immediately turning down the volume. As he eats his dinner he thinks about how grateful to Allah he is, for the peaceful and quiet life he has now. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that he would make it to where he is today and have all he has.  It has been a long horrible road, but he got through it all and now everything in his life is as it should be. He finishes his food not having paid any attention to what was on TV, puts his dirty plate in the dish washer, and sets it to wash. He pours himself another glass of water and goes into his office. Tomorrow is the monthly staff meeting and he needs to get up to date with the financial figures from his businesses. He logs on to his pc and opens his business files. Two hours and a stiff neck later he is finished. He prints of the spreadsheets he will need for tomorrow’s meeting, shuts down the pc and heads upstairs to take a shower. After his shower he brushes his teeth and puts on a clean pair of boxers. As he gets into bed he remembers that it is date night tomorrow night. He smiles as his head hits the pillow “tomorrow I get to spend some quality time with my princess” he whispers, before closing his eyes and drifting peacefully to sleep.
