El slid through the hallway. People brushed past her, talking to their friends. She stopped at her locker and frowned when she couldn't see Mike anywhere.

She pulled out her books and shut her locker to reveal a mean girls face.

El almost jumped out of her skin.

She began to walk away quickly, but the girl grabbed her arm.

"Hey, El, is it?"

El whipped around. "What," she hissed through her teeth. "Do you want?"

The girl frowned. "I just wanted to say I'm really sorry for being so mean. I'm Maddie," she added.

"I'm not sure what got into me. I'm having a hard time at home... my little sister is.. nothing. Anyway, I wanted to know if you wanted to come over to my house later and hang out!"

El opened her mouth to say she had plans, but Maddie had already squealed and hugged her.

El's eyes widened. What the heck?

Maddie smiled. "I'll see you after school!"

She skipped away.

El stood in shock as she watched her, until arms snaked around her waist and she was flipped around by her boyfriend.

He kissed her gently. "Hey," He said.

"Hey.." El replied, looking over her shoulder at Maddie again.

He frowned as he followed her gaze.

"Was that girl giving you a hard time again?" He asked worriedly.

His eyes narrowed and his fists clenched, and El found herself a little scared to be in his arms. "I'll get her, she'll see.." he mumbled angrily.

El's eyes widened and she shook her head quickly. "No, she just... wanted to see the homework from class."

Mike raised his eyebrows but followed her to class anyway.

During lunch, El picked at her food. Mike couldn't figure out what was the matter.

"Babe, what's wrong?" He asked her.

"I'm just... thinking." She replied thoughtfully.

"About what?" Mike prompted.

"Stuff.." she mumbled.

He put his hand on her thigh, and shivers rocketed up her spine.

"El.. please tell me."

She shook her head. "It's really nothing. Just a project for school. Speaking of which, I can't come over later. I have to work on it."

Mike started to protest, but she pulled away from him and hurried out of the lunchroom.

He grumpily finished his food.

Maddie crushed El in another hug. "I'm so excited!" She squealed.

They trekked to Maddie's house and they talked. El realized Maddie was actually a pretty cool girl. She didn't understand why she had been so mean to her before, but she was ready to forgive her.

For days after that, El hung out with Maddie. She even ate lunch with her a couple days, making up excuses to the party.

Two weeks later, Mike was starting to get annoyed. Why was El avoiding him?

He cornered her in a hallway after school, and pushed her into an empty classroom.

"Mike," El warned. She glanced over her shoulder, trying to struggle free.

Mike held her firmly in his arms.

"Mike, I really gotta go," El protested. "I have stuff to do."

"LIKE WHAT?" Mike snarled.

El shuddered under his mad gaze. She tried to move away, but he smashed his hand against the wall next to her.

El felt horrible. Friends don't lie, she reminded herself. But this was for the best. Who knew what Mike would do if he found out she was hanging out with Maddie.

Tears filled her eyes. "Mike," she whispered. "Please let me go."

He moved his hand away from the wall.

She began to move, then ran back and kissed him softly.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, then left the room.

Mike was left in the dark empty room, his heart broken and he didn't understand why.
