el brushed through her short hair with a comb, smiling at her reflection in the mirror. she really thought she needed to be pretty.

everything was happy once again.

christmas eve.

el applied some light makeup to her face, and slipped on her converse before pulling on her small trendy backpack that she used outside of school.

she stuck in a book, a pencil, some makeup, and with a small smile, threw in some extra clothes.

she flicked off the light and shut her door, thumping down the stairs to breakfast, which annoyed jonathan, but he had a soft spot for her now, and let her do things.

she flashed him her signature precious smile as she slid in to breakfast next to will. "hey, el. you ready to go?" she nodded with a big smile.

"yeah, I'm so excited."

will grinned. "me too."

they were going to the wheelers house for dinner, but all the kids wanted to go early to hang out. the boys would probably play dungeons and dragons, even though mike said 'they were too old for it' ( get the reference you guys cmon ), but they all liked it still anyway.

when they finally arrived, the door flew open, and max and el hugged each other tightly.

"woah, can i please see my girlfriend now?" mike grumbled from behind her, after they'd been hugging for about a minute.

"chill, mikey, you probably saw her yesterday." max retorted as she pulled away.

"actually, last night," el said with a giggle as he wrapped his arms around her, kissing her head and burying his head in her neck, el standing on her tippy toes so he could.

"move along, lovebirds," will laughed as he pushed past the greet everyone, and max shut the front door with a smile, leaving el and mike on the porch.

"i missed you so much it hurts," mike whined.

"you actually saw me last night!" el laughed.

"i know, but it seems so long ago," mike whispered, and pressed his lips against hers. she smiled as she felt warmth fill her body, but the door opened again.

"are you guys coming or not?"

with a roll of her eyes, el took mike's warm hand and they followed their friends into the house.

el leaned her legs on mike's legs, leaning her head on his shoulder. their chairs were pressed together, and she was basically on his lap, but not all the way. he had one hand running through her hair, but he would scream and let go to say something for d&d, which was really annoying.

"el!" she glanced up to see max waving her over and pointing to the couch across the room. she grinned and wiggled her way off mike, which he whined at, but she kissed him quickly before jumping on the couch, max right behind her.

"hey," she said breathlessly.

"so what do you think about this game they're always playing?" max said with an annoyed face.

"it's boring in my opinion, but it makes mike happy, so I deal with it." el said, watching him get excited and run his hands through his perfect hair.

"yeah..." max's face softened as she looked at lucas's grinning face.

"let's make hot cocoa," el suggested, and so the girls ran up the stairs, pulling out mugs for everyone and making some.

el sighed as she glanced out the window at the falling white spots. "it's so cold," she said with a sigh.

max nodded, sprinkling marshmallows into cups, and handing a few to el, they balanced them in their arms as they walked down the stairs.

"mmmm!" dustin reached out for one immediately, but max moved it out of his reach.

"you only get one if you'll all take a break from the game for a while," she said with a smile.

they all groaned but agreed, and max and el exchanged a happy smile.

el handed one to will, and skipped over to the couch, sitting down and waiting with a smile as mike joined her, pulling her into his lap and taking a cup from her.

she smiled as she sipped her cocoa.

"how are you doing?" she asked.

he smiled, looking tired but happy. "i'm doing okay. i'm glad you're here with me."

el smiled back, feeling a little itch at her arm and pulling down her sleeve self consciously, making mike give her a look.

"el," he said, a tone of worry in his voice.

she shook her head. "just the scars mike... it's fine."

he grabbed her arm. "el, let me see..."

she shook her head. "mike, it's fine, I-,"

he pulled up her sleeve and his mouth opened a little in shock, seeing the new cuts.

"el," he whispered, hurt. he set down his cup and took hers too, setting it down and standing up, carrying her to the bathroom.

he shut the door behind him and set her down on the edge of the bathtub, which she scowled at.

he wet a rag, and despite he protests rolled up her sleeve and pressed it against the cuts, cleaning the blood. el winced as pain flashed through her, then relaxed as the cold rag deeper into her skin.

mike brushed back some of her hair. "el... why?"

she sighed. "it's just- it's just the stress. i don't - i don't know. everyone knows things i don't. it's a miracle I even got into school. i don't know what so many things are, i'm so behind in school, and everyone helps me, but -,"

she looked up at him, tears in her eyes.

"mike, what about when i move out? how will i be able to live by myself? i can't do anything right."

tears began to slip down her face, and she sniffled as mike brushed some away with his hand.

"el... i'll always be here for you. i'll take care you always. you'll live with me."

she sniffled again, looking into his eyes.

"promise?"

"promise."

he kissed her gently, and put the rag in the sink before climbing in the tub, her sitting between his legs, still sniffling. she crawled into his arms, and even though it wasn't how they planned their christmas eve to go, it was all they could have wanted.

the snow outside built up as the couple sat in each other's arms, happier then they would have been if this didn't happen.

"mike... i love you so much."

"i love you even more then you could possible imagine, el. i'll never let go of you. i promise."
