hey everyone. this was a really hard chapter for me to write emotionally, and I was stressed out about this one, but I'm glad I wrote it, though. I hope you all enjoy! make sure to vote!

El pushed past Mike on the way out of class, biting her lip.

She wished she could turn and hug him. She couldn't. He would probably push her away.

The rest of the day went by in a blur. Finally it was time for the party. It was going to be at Maddie's House, since she had a huge house and there was a big ballroom.

El gaped as she walked inside. Maddie had been decorating for days, by the look of it.

Maddie stepped up next to her. "You like it?" She asked.

El nodded. "I love it."

They prepared snacks and music and got ready, putting on more makeup and doing their hair.

People started arriving.

People El had never seen.

The table for presents rose up in the air as people dropped presents on it. El's eyes widened.

She smiled as people greeted her, but her face broke into a grin as she spotted Max, Lucas, Dustin, and Will.

They crushed her in a hug.

"Happy Birthday!" They exclaimed.

"I'm so glad you guys came," El whispered.

Dustin grinned. "We wouldn't miss it for the world."

El continued to greet guests, but she was looking for one curly haired boy in particular.

She waited even after guests had stopped arriving, staring at the door, wishing she could see his freckles.

"Hey, El!" Maddie hissed. "Cmon, Let's play a game!"

For the next couple hours El had fun, but she wished Mike was there.

She took a breather in the hallway, and she gasped softly as she saw someone setting down a present. A curly haired someone in particular.

El stopped herself from running over to him and kissing him right there.

He turned around, his cheeks reddening when he saw her.

"Hi," she whispered.

"Hey... Happy Birthday." He responded, looking around. "Looks nice.." he murmured.

El nodded. "Yeah... Maddie did it."

His head jerked up angrily at the sound of her name, but his eyes softened when he saw the tear rolling down El's face.

"Let's talk..." He whispered.

El nodded and he pulled her upstairs into a bedroom.

More tears were rolling down her face as he walked over to her, wiping one away with his finger.

"Mike," she whispered. "I'm so so sorry."

She began to sob, and he wrapped his arms around her as she cried.

He ran his fingers through her hair, murmuring to her softly.

"El, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pushed you away like I did. You didn't deserve that."

She shook her head, looking into his eyes. "I betrayed you. I lied to you. Friends don't lie."

Mike looked at her sadly.

"Yeah, El, but... I don't think we're just friends."

El was about to ask what he meant, but before she could say anything he had pressed his lips against hers, and she was wrapping her arms around his neck, feeling happier then she had for a long time.

He pressed her against the wall, and El's tears spilled onto his shirt as they kissed.

El smiled as he pulled away, but then he began to kiss down her neck.

Her eyes widened. What was he doing?

Mike kissed El's neck softly, and he felt her body tingle. He smiled. This was really weird for him, as he'd never done anything like it before, but Lucas told him about it, and so he thought he'd try it.

What in the world was he doing? El sighed softly as he nipped at her neck gently. She closed her eyes as he kissed her.

When he was finished they were both out of breath, and El wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her head in his shoulder.

"I love you," he murmured.

Her heart leapt in the air. "I love you too."

She lay next to him on the bed, and he wrapped his arms around her. She felt safe.

This was the birthday she wanted.

Meanwhile, Maddie was looking everywhere for El. She spotted her other friends and rushed over to them.

"Have you seen El?" She asked breathlessly.

They shook their heads. "I'll help look," Max offered.

Maddie nodded and together they crept upstairs and looked around. Maddie creaked open a guest bedroom door, and she giggled.

Max poked her head in. They both laughed quietly.

El and Mike were wrapped around each other, asleep, El's face buried in Mike's chest.

"Well, I guess they made up," Max whispered.

Maddie nodded, but she felt tears in her eyes.

She knew that El would stop hanging out with her now.

It was fun while it lasted, but she knew that El loved Mike a lot. She was always sad. She got tears in her eyes when she looked at him in school.

El loved Mike enough to leave her when Maddie needed a friend the most.
