"Can I ask you something first? How did you get this job? I think I'd like it, making sure people die."

"Well Mihael -"

"You can call me Mello."

"Ok Mello. I have a different job from most shinigami. Because I'm actually dead, you see."

"So even gods of death die?"

"It's rare but it can happen. I saved a life once, for love. But I died for it as it's against the rules."

"For love? Ick, I'd never fall in love," Mello said scornfully.

"You think that now, but when you fall, you fall."

"No way, I'd rather fall off the roof. I can't love when I'm dead."

"No," Gelus sighed. "You can't do anything then."

"Good. I don't want to feel anything anymore," Mello said quietly.

"Feeling and doing are different things. It might pain you to feel, but your feelings aren't a bad thing. They're what makes you you."

"Enough of that bullshit, I don't want to feel and that's that," Mello pouted.

"Ok, I understand. But the world will be very different without you in it, Mello. You may feel insignificant now, but you're far from it. There are things only you can do, and they are things that need to be done. Maybe you don't care about helping the world right now, but you will. And you will find love too. If you're willing, I can show you how the world will pan out without you. It's still your choice then, but you should know all the options first."

"Why do you care?" Mello asked, close to tears. "No one ever cares."

"I just do. You're not a bad person, Mello. You're just a lonely child who feels hurt."

Mello nodded, holding back the tears.

"Ok then, show me. But only because you're nice. Not because I care."

"Of course," Gelus smiled a little and Mello smiled back.
