Chapter 6
We passed several slides. A couple statues of safari animals stood in the center. A hippo stood with its mouth open. An elephant had a kid’s slide down its truck. If the foster kid’s in my family weren’t so afraid of me, I might have taken them here.
We then passed a pair of monkey bars. Johanna was a head shorter than me and walked right under without any bend in her knees while me being a head taller almost banged my head on that thing.
At the end of the park we came upon a fence. The other side was covered in wooded area. She swiftly climbed over and I followed.
She climbed over before me and waited. When I got over, she turned and smiled. “Now close your eyes.”
“I’m not that stupid.”
“Oh don’t be such a pussy. Close your eyes.”
I sighed and closed my eyes. “Happy?”
I heard a laugh. “Very.”
I felt a pair of hands on my shoulders and I soon felt myself slamming into something.
I opened my eyes and glared at her. She made me walk into a fricken tree. Johanna laughed, her face already red from laughter. “S-sorry grumpy. I c-couldn’t resist. It w-was just too perfect.” She said gasping for air and clutching her chest.
I bit my lip from laughing and tried to look angry her. Her laughter was literally contagious. “I’m going to kill you.”
She laughed, backing away slowly. “I-It was accident.”
“I’m sure as hell it was. “ I replied sarcastically. She tried to run and I easily grabbed her. I didn’t think she could laugh any harder but when I started to tickle her she bursted into a thunder of laughter.
“STOP IT! OH MY GOD, I CAN’T BREATHE!”
Her red face was stained with tears. I laughed as I tickled her and watcher her squirm and laugh under my grasp.
Just to add a little sprinkle to our eventful day, it started to rain. This was an advantage to her. She scooped a handful of mud and flung it to my face.
I wipe the mud off my eyes and growled. Before she could react I picked her up and threw her in a mud puddle and smiled with triumph.
She gasped and she glared at me leaving me barking with laugher.
We easily forgot whole reason why we were there in the first place.
It turned into a full out mud fight. After about an hour, we couldn’t even see the color of our clothes with all the mud splattered on it. Our hair was completely wet and my feet were practically bathing with the amount of water in my shoes.
The two of us raced back to my car. We ran up a hill. Johanna was ahead of me and I pulled her back by her arm. She struggled in my grasp and I pushed her back . She screamed as she did a mudslide down the hill. I ran ahead when a sudden wait was on my back. I gave Johanna a piggyback ride until she lost her grasp and fell backward into a mud puddle.
I laughed. “Someone has weak arm strength.”
She pouted. “I don’t-“ Her face changed as she looked ahead.
I looked ahead and saw my car sitting in the empty parking lot.
We jumped and ran, racing to the car.
I reached the car first, putting the keys in and hopping in the car. Johanna ran to the car only to find the all the door’s locked.
She laughed. “That’s not fair!”
“Sorry I can’t hear you inside this nice, dry and cozy car.”
After a series of pleading from Johanna I finally unlocked the door.
She climbed in and I offered her a spare jacket. She snatched it from me and laughed. “You’re a jerk.”
“Thank you. Now where do you live?” I asked as I started the engine.
This ended in several more U-turns and yelling from Johanna.
I stop the car at a small blue Victorian house. Johanna slipped her converse off. I unlocked the car door and escorted her back.
It was still raining but we couldn’t get any more drenched.
Johanna slipped and I caught her wrist and pulled she fell forward towards me. She caught my shirt and regained her balance. She looked up and my eyes met hers. She was close that I could my reflection in her eyes. I leaned forward then stopped myself. What are you doing Rowan?
I stepped back and ranked my hand through my hair. I couldn’t get her involved? I didn’t know the trouble I was facing and what these people could do?
I looked everywhere but the disappointment her face, the houses, the trees, the cars, anything but her.
“I gotta go.”
I mumbled a curse and punched the hood of my car. Why did everything have to be so complicated?
