I watched from the side lines as the other men encircled him as he regaled them with the odd feeling. Like someone tugged on his shirt, something heavy pushed him to the ground. I wanted to complain at him, telling him I wasn't heavy but bit my tongue. Then men started talking, discussing their next move. I watched with interest, wondering who the instigator or maybe instigators were. There was one man, mid set frame, dark blonde hair with very handsome features. He was the instigator; the rest were mindless followers. Why? What was his problem? The majority of the men were happy, some had already been approved for jobs and relationships. Relationships meant that they would leave this building and be moved into the other building with their new partner when the new buildings went up. The maps of the buildings had included the new ones that were waiting to be built, including the family accommodation. They all knew that there was the possibility of having a permanent relationship here. They could have free reign over how much sex they had provided they produced a child or a pregnancy within the first year. So what was this guy's problem? I entered his mind, he had a job that he liked out on the farm land, he was earning a wage. He had applied for the integrated living but his application had been halted. Why? I slowly walked the edge of the room, reading his mind. He applied, he sat the genetics test and told there was a few choices available to him, the next step was the psych evaluation.
The thing about us vampires was that we liked to keep secrets. One of them was like what I was doing, the ability to become invisible. Another was the ability to read minds. This particular human had sat the psych evaluation with the psychiatrist, unaware that a panel of vampires were behind the glass window reading his mind. Every single human would go through this, to evaluate if they were a threat to themselves or to someone else. And this man here, he was a real problem. He wasn't a threat to himself, nor to any man in this room. No, he was a threat to women. I flicked through hundreds of horrid images of him and what he did when he was a free man. No wonder he was protesting, in his mind he was lusting for the women he couldn't get to, his mind taunted him. Watching the women as they sat in the park, eating in the food hall, in the library. It was only a matter of time before he struck and as a victim of a vile act, I wouldn't want any woman to go through it. Human or vampire, women needed to be protected from him. I continued to edge the wall, waiting until I was in a good position. As he looked to my direction, I flickered my image so that he could see me and then returned to nothing again. He frowned as he looked at what would be a bare wall. Slowly I edged to the archway, doing it again. Curiosity had struck him and he quietly slipped away from the group. He followed me to the empty corridor between their dorm rooms, I flickered my image again outside the bathroom. The man watched the door open by itself, cautiously walking through it. I was sitting on the vanity as he closed the door, he grinned at me as I reappeared.
"Boss lady, what a pleasant surprise. Here to negotiate?"
"Why are you rioting?"
"I want to be approved for integrated living."
"You know why you were not approved, don't you?"
"No." he shook his head with a devilish smirk, slowly etching closer.
"You do, you are a rapist and we will not have the likes of you around innocent women."
"If I am what you say I am, why do you put yourself in danger?"
"I'm not in danger."
"How so?"
He moved closer, now within striking distance.
"Do you know of a vampire's abilities?"
"Well I just learned that they can disappear."
"We can." I grinned. "What else?"
