Chapter 1: June 8, 2012
It all went by as fast as lightning. First I was over here, and then I was over there. I couldn’t see anything but I knew my eyes were open. Where was Daniel? Why won’t anyone tell me what is going on? Daniel, all I need is Daniel. Suddenly, everything stopped and my eyes slowly shut. What is happening? Why can’t I move? Why can’t I speak? I was crying out for help on the inside but lying motionless on the outside. What’s wrong with me? What happened that put me here, wherever I was? I heard someone call out for a nurse; I knew I was in a hospital. But why am?! I knew someone was standing there, right by my side. I felt a slight squeeze on my hand and the sounds of sobbing.
“Bonnie, you can’t do this to me. You can’t. I won’t let you. I made a promise.”
This was Daniel, I knew it was. It had to be. I couldn’t stand the sound of him crying because of me. I just wanted to scream out, “Daniel, I’m okay!” but I couldn’t.
“I made a promise to you Bonnie. I promised I would never let anything happen to you. Especially not anything like this.”
I heard him cry even harder and squeeze my hand a little tighter. I wanted so badly to squeeze back, even just a little bit but I just couldn’t. I tried talking; I tried opening my eyes, anything to get his attention.
“I’m sorry Bonnie. I never got my chance. I never got my chance to prove to you that I… I love you Bonnie. I’m so sorry.”
He let go of my hand. As soon as he let go, a single tear slowly rolled down my cheek. I waited to hear his footsteps walking away from me but something stopped him. I felt the heat of his hand come closer and closer to my face, slowly wiping away the tear that was on my cheek. Daniel sat back down next to me and took hold of my hand again.
“I’m here Bonnie.”
