I sometimes wish I was a normal girl, someone with friends. But who am I to go against my orders?
Just my luck, I end up going down the wrong corridor. I was lost in thought, and now I'm literally lost. The Headmistress moved some of the classes into different rooms since I last attended this school. Finally, after what feels like a lifetime of confusion, I'm on the right path. Walking down the hallway, I stop in front of a classroom with "Biology 3-B" posted above the doorway. Fifteen minutes late for first class is not a good impression for the new girl. I peek into the window. Students are already sitting at their tables. With a sigh, I push open the door and walk into the classroom. The professor is standing in front of his desk facing the class. I'm a few steps inside before he turns to me and smiles.
"Welcome to Biology, I'm Professor Gai Yami," he says. "You must be Sasame Kai."
I nod, return the smile and take a moment to scan the class for familiar faces. My heart sinks as my gaze lands on Ronan. He must have gone down the correct hall when I left him.
He looks up from his desk and stares straight into my eyes. I smile at him, brushing a strand of hair from my forehead. It's not like I'm trying to be cute, that strand of hair was in the way. I look around the room again and that's when I notice him. He stares right at me and smiles. That sexy, evil grin makes my body freeze. His name is Leon Genius, the first boy I ever had a crush on—but that was years ago before I even knew what "having a crush" meant. He's lazy, sarcastic, and he lets his mouth get him into trouble. Yet, he's one of the best fighters I've ever known. His surname couldn't be a better fit, being that he's the smartest and most cunning strategist at the academy. I look at him for a minute, hoping he doesn't recognize who I am. His eyes shift from me to Ronan and I let out a sigh of relief. He leans over nudging Ronan's arm with his elbow.
"Do you know her?" he stage whispers.
"I met her last week at the festival," Ronan says, keeping his eyes on me.
Don't they know everyone can hear them? Some of the other students start whispering and pointing at me. The blood rushes to my cheeks.
That blonde-haired kid, Nevin, sitting at the table behind Ronan leans forward to barge into the conversation. "Did you see the way she smiled at you?"
Now, this is getting awkward. I just want to find a seat and hide from all the stares.
Finally, Professor Gai raises one hand to quiet the class. "Okay, everyone, settle down."
It took him long enough, standing here on display was getting uncomfortable. He turns to me as he points to the empty seat next to Ronan. "Why don't you go sit next to Ronan, the boy with the long hair, for now?"
I sit in the empty seat beside Ronan. He blushes slightly but turns his head quickly to keep me from seeing. I pretend I don't notice and place my books on the table. As I reach down to straighten out my skirt, I notice Ronan staring at me out of the corner of my eye. My face turns bright red. Why is he staring at me?
"So much for you being able to find your way to class," he says nudging my arm with his elbow.
My cheeks burn and I let out a small laugh. "Yeah...well...this place is a bit more confusing than I thought."
"See, you should've let me help instead of trying to kill me." Ronan laughs a bit before looking away toward the front of the class. A smirk crosses his face and I can only imagine what he's thinking. This seating arrangement will need to be changed soon if I want to stay on top of things. Maybe I can shake this up a bit. He can't throw me off my game if I take him by surprise first. I clear my throat to get his attention, but he's still staring at the professor. The lecture isn't that interesting.
