I'm not a loser like some people think I am. I'll show them. I'll be a hero one day.
Jeiku, Dante, and I stand at Gate Section 25. The large brick wall is a good fifty feet high, and the gate door—made of thick steel—is about ten feet tall. Even though it's close to sunset, the freaking sun is making everything hot. It's almost unbearable.
The three of us have been standing in one spot for hours. Every now and then, I think I hear the Konadai growling, only to realize it's my stomach. Maybe I should have eaten a bigger lunch.
Jeiku, being as active as he is, paces in front of the gate with his hands on the back of his head. He lets out a loud growl and drops them.
"This is beyond boring!" He lies down on a bench with his eyes closed.
I lean on the large gate door careful not to touch the credential pad. "When are we going to see some Konadai trying to climb over this thing?"
Dante crosses his arms and grinds his teeth.
"You won't," he says, without looking at us. "They can't climb and they aren't smart enough to get through the gate. Our job is not to keep the Konadai away, but to keep people in the city and out of danger."
"So what? We just sit here to make sure no one tries to leave? That's boring." I say, looking up at the wall. It's true. There haven't been any reports that I know of about Konadai breaching the wall. Even if it did happen, I always thought the Eradication Squad would handle it before the virus spread.
Dante shakes his head and opens his mouth to speak, but Jeiku growls again.
"Just like I said before. Boring!"
Dante folds his arms. "Since you're so bored, go get us something to drink."
"So now I'm your errand boy?"
"Would you stop all that yelling? You're giving me a headache." Leon walks up to us. He's dressed up like he's about to go outside the gate. His goggles are the same type Dante wears. Only, the lenses are darker, like sunglasses. His sleeveless shirt, black combat pants and boots match well together. I'm pretty convinced Leon doesn't actually fight. That big ass sword—it's nearly taller than him—looks cool, but can he actually do anything with it?
I cross my arms, staring at Leon as if he is a stranger. "You're the last person I thought I would see at the gate. So, what are you doing here?"
He shrugs. "I was just walking around town when I heard Jeiku's annoying voice." Jeiku growls at Leon, baring his sharp teeth. Leon ignores him. "I was really looking for Maria. You guys haven't seen her have you?" He keeps the sword on his shoulder, keeping the blade away from the concrete. The gleam on the thin edge proves that thing is as sharp as a razor. I can imagine what it can do to a Konadai's throat.
"No, we haven't seen her," Dante says. "Did you check with her brothers?"
"Nah, they don't bother to answer my calls."
"Well, this is weird." I take my eyes away from Leon's sword and put my hand on my chin. "All the girls have gone missing—well, the important ones anyway."
Jeiku jumps up and starts yelling. "I know! The girls are a part of some sort of secret organization set out to destroy all that is good. No one is safe, I tell you! No one!"
Leon raises an eyebrow at Fang. "Lay off the sugar, dude."
"The girls can handle themselves," Dante says, ignoring Fang. "They're probably shopping or something. Besides, we have a duty to fulfill."
