We've been fighting off horde after horde for an hour now, it never ends. Jacob hands me a pistol and tells me to stay back, I guess he doesn't want an Okamikiin like me going all demon wolf. I follow orders and stay down behind the wall. I look at Nevin and Dante as they attempt to keep a blonde girl from bleeding out.
"Hand me my med kit!" Dante yells out, holding both hands tight on the girls wounded arm. She's lucky it was just the claws that got her.
I could help, but what could I do? I shouldn't even be here but I couldn't let Nevin and Dante have all the fun. I just hope Rin's safe...Rin...I haven't heard from her in a while. She's been avoiding me at school. The guards at the compound doubled up so there's no way I'm sneaking in without getting caught. I wonder where she is now.
"Jeiku, let's move!" Dante's voice breaks into my thoughts. He motions toward a clear area next door for us to regroup. I was so caught up in thinking about Rin that I didn't even notice the fight was over. These guys actually managed to clear out the horde without losing anyone else.
I jog over to meet up with the squad, staring as the twins exchange ammo and double check each other's gear.
"Everyone, check your packs and ammo. Make sure you're fully loaded," Jacob says as he checks the clip in his rifle.
I don't have a pack; all I have is this handgun. I check the clip; fully loaded, one in the chamber.
"Hey, Jacob, I need an extra clip."
He throws me one and I put it in my back pocket. I doubt I'll ever actually use this gun, but I like the way it feels. It's nice to hold something so...manly.
Nevin walks over to me and nudges me on the arm. He has a slight grin on his face, his white teeth clashing with the dirt on his face.
"Is this enough excitement for ya?" he asks jokingly.
"I wouldn't have it any other way," I reply back. "By the way, how did Dante end up with these guys?"
Nevin lets out a heavy sigh. "Hell if I know, I told him I was going for help when another squad got pinned down. I just met them the same time you did." He looks over my shoulder and nods his head. "Check out who just showed up."
I turn around and see two of our friends, Antonio and his girlfriend Carrie, jog up to us. They're both covered in dirt and black goo. A large bruise sticks out from under Carrie's short sleeve. Bandages wrap around Antonio's right elbow.
"Never thought I'd see you two show up," Dante says walking up to us. "Where's your squad, Carrie?"
"I thought they would be here with you guys," she responds, giving Antonio the side-eye.
"Carrie was separated from them after she was attacked," Antonio chimes in. "I figured it would be best for her to stay with me until we could find them."
Dante nods in agreement before walking over to speak with Jacob. I slump down on to the ground and cross my arms. At this point, I'm bored—even though my blood is boiling from the battle. I'd rather be ripping those things apart instead of sitting in a corner like a dog in time out.
"What's your problem?" Nevin asks kneeling down beside me.
"Bored!" I huff.
Nevin laughs and slaps my shoulder. "C'mon, Jeiku, what more could you want? We're finally Konadai hunters!" He raises his arms looking around as if to say this is great.
I let out a small laugh and lay back on the ground. I'm bored, not sure why but I am. Even the clouds seem more interesting than this. Dark smoke rises in the distance from another battle zone. The sound of Konadai screeches echoes through the forgotten city. It terrifies me, causing me to start thinking about that dream I had at the hospital. The one with the girl in her own pool of blood smiling at me before she turns into Rin...Rin...
