Lauren lays the hair straightener on the counter and inspects my hair, looking for any bumps. I love when Lauren does my hair, I can just sit back and relax, knowing that my hair is going to look awesome.
"Ok, your hair is finished!" she says though a sing-song tone.
I run my fingers through my hair and grin at Lauren through the mirror.
"Thank you so much!" I exclaim while turning around and hugging her tightly.
She laughs quietly and hugs me back.
"It's no problem," she replies while we pull out of the hug.
We walk out of the bathroom and sit down on my newly made bed. Lauren turns to me with a wide smile and parts my hair around my face.
"So what are you going to wear today?" she questions as she finishes with my hair.
I stand up from the bed and walk over to the wardrobe, searching through the many hanging clothes. I stop at one dress and pull it out, shoving it in front of me.
"How about this?" I ask while turning to Lauren.
Lauren walks over and studies the dress. She looks me up and down with a very serious face, and I struggle not to laugh at her facial expression. Her face suddenly lights up and a smile spreads across her face.
"I think you should definitely wear it!" she squeals through delight.
I laugh and then a noise coming from my bedside table gets our attention. Lauren rushes over and checks her phone.
"Mum is over at the car wash, just around the corner, so she wants me to meet her there." Lauren says while rolling her eyes.
"Do you want me to walk you over?" I ask genuinely.
"No, you stay here and get ready for your big day." Lauren says through a smirk.
I shake my head at her and open my bedroom door.
"Go on then, I'll call you later on tonight, ok?"
Lauren nods her head and walks out of the room.
"Have fun today Ab!" she calls as I shut my door.
I shake my head and sigh quietly. All I wanted to do today was sleep and hang out with my friends, but I can't because of this stupid, pointless get together.
I mean, I do love my family but I dont get why we have to have some stupid party because I graduated high school.
Oh well, I guess I get to catch up with all my relatives again. Well, most of them anyway. I shut my eyes and take a deep breath. I can't and won't think about that right now. I re-open my eyes and sit down on my bed. I stare at my dress and play with the fabric of it. I wish Nathan could be here today, wait, maybe he can. Mum didn't say he couldn't.
I reach over and grab my phone off my bedside table. I type in his well known number and wait for him to pick up.
"Hey baby." he greets warmly.
I smile slightly and lean back against the wall.
"Hi bub."
"So, what's up babe? Is something wrong?" I can hear the hidden, worried tone behind his welcoming voice.
"No, nothing is wrong. I was just wondering, what are you doing today?"
He goes quiet for a minute, and then he replies.
"I'm, um, going out with some friends." I can hear the hesitance in his voice and I frown slightly.
"Oh, ok then. Well that's all I wanted to know."
