"You really have to go?" Brendan asked again, holding Elizabeth's hand as she stood beside her car. He had already helped her carry her suitcase to her beat-up car. "Never mind I know the answer is yes, I just wish you could stay a little longer."
"I know," she pressed a quick kiss to his lips, which he leaned in to try and make it last longer.
"I've really got to go Bren," Elizabeth laughed, sadness laced her voice. "I have like a six hour drive ahead of me."
He rested his forehead against hers, "One month and then you're done classes? Then you can visit again?"
"My parents don't expect me home for Christmas this year, maybe I could visit then," Elizabeth placed both her hands on his face and pulled him closer for one more kiss goodbye.
"Why won't you be with your family?" He asked as she opened her car door.
She shrugged, "They sold our house in Toronto for like over a million dollars and moved out to Alberta. I think it was so I'd be more independent instead of always being at home whenever I didn't have class."
"Shit, that's crazy," Brendan laughed.
Elizabeth smiled, "It is something else,"
They stood there for a minute just looking at one another before Elizabeth broke the silence. "I guess I should get going."
"Yeah," he stepped back and ran a hand through his hair. He didn't know how much Elizabeth loved when he did that. "I'll be counting the days until I get to see you again."
"I'll be doing the same," she smiled and closed her door, starting her car.
As she reached to turn on her radio, she thought about how much she was going to miss Brendan. Her heart broke inside her chest as she realized she'd be in a different city than him again.
Her thoughts drifted to her conversation with Jillian the day before, where the two figured out that she was probably in love with the hockey player. Her biggest fear was making herself vulnerable to someone again, and telling them you love them is the biggest vulnerability out there.
She turned her attention to her window and waved to Brendan, pulling out of her parking space and driving away; the entire time there was a lump in her throat until she was half way home. Driving down the 401 her sad smile was accompanied by her voice, "I'm in love with you Brendan."
