Before I begin. This will make more sense if you read the Chapter titled "Je te veux: Maria Reynolds" in my Things & Stuff book.
~~~~~~~~~
It was the 27th December when Thomas woke up to a knock at the door. James had left the Thomas' apartment a couple hours ago to go to a lecture, so Thomas knew it wasn't him.
So he slid out of his bed, rubbing his eyes as he headed to the door. He unlocked the door and peered around it.
Then he saw her.
Standing outside on the porch in the cold. She was bundled up in a gray winter jacket and bright red scarf, with a small suitcase in her hands. Her curly brown hair falling down past her shoulders as she tucked a few strands behind her ear.
"T-Thomas, I know you probably don't want to see me but I-" she started, but she was cut off when Thomas gave her a large hug.
" I was so worried about you. My lin woman- you blocked my number and I couldn't tell you. Me and James worked things out, and I told him how Reynolds treated you, and I promise he isn't mad." Thomas rambled on.
She began to cry tears of overwhelming joy and relief as she melted into Thomas' embrace. She had been through so much, sadness and abuse. She pulled away from the hug and Thomas caught a glance of her face. She had a bruise just below her right eye and on her jaw. Her lips were bitten and chapped. Her eyes were glossy and sad. However Thomas knew it was the same girl he knew and remembered from highschool.
" I missed you Maria." Thomas said.
" I missed you too Tommy."
Maria sat on Thomas' couch, and Thomas handed her a mug of hot chocolate to warm her up. She carefully took the mug as she felt the the warmth prickled against her skin. She blew om the surface of the liquid before carefully taking a sip. For a moment the apartment was completely silent. Until Maria spoke up.
"Thomas, how would you like to be a god father."
" God father?" Thomas questioned " Why would you ask me- " the realization hit him all at once. "Maria. Are you going to have a baby?"
" Y-Yes I am. It's due in August."Maria waited for his response.
Thomas' voice turned excited. "Oh my lin! How long have you known?"
"A month or so." Maria said quietly.
"Maria, you should of told me."
Just then the front door swung open to reveal James Madison standing in the doorway.
"Hey Thomas, Im back and I was wondering-" He stopped when he noticed Maria sitting on the couch. He quickly ran over to give her a hug. "Maria, I'm so sorry about before, if I had known."
"Its ok Jem. Sit down, I've got something to tell you."
I wanted Maria to be seen for something more than what she is made out to be, like I did with Thomas. To be honest, I believe that, in the musical, Maria was tired of being mistreated. She wanted someone to love her and appreciate her. I'm not saying what she did was right, but rather that I sympathize with her reasons for why she did it.
I also think we forget that Burr was also a home wrecker. He was "...keeping the bed warm..." while Theo's husband was away. Yet no one ever get upset with him.
Whatever.
I hope you enjoyed the chapter.
Sincerely,
Welp
