Never Be Lonely

As we walked down to the kitchen, a lot of the boys were staring at us. I felt very self-conscience all of a sudden. This is like some (what was that word they used?... Shucking?) tv show where it is all about romance or something. I was starting to think the girls of the Glade were boy crazy which isn't exactly a good things considering our situation. I'm not boy crazy. Ok, so I thought a guy was cute, that doesn't mean anything.

I grabbed my plate after Jo did. I was kind of following her around more than anyone else. She seemed to be following Amy who in turn was going with Teresa. Teresa went and sat down at a table with two boys. The rest of us girls followed suit. Teresa sat next to one of the boys that had black hair, brown eyes, and was pale. Teresa gave him a kiss which made me assume he was Thomas. Amy sat across from Teresa, I sat to her left across from Thomas, and Jo sat on my other side across from the other boy. He had darker skin and black hair and bulging muscles a bit more obvious from Thomas's. His hair was fabulous which seemed to contradict the rest of him. Not that he was ugly, he just looked exhausted.

"Is this the new Greenie?" Fabulous Hair asked.

"Ya. Name's y/n," I responded holding out my hand.

"Minho," he said shaking my hand. "I'm Keeper of the runners."

"Oh. You're Minho. Ok," I said smiling slightly. Minho looked confused and Jo kicked me under the table. I had to hold in my laughter so I pretended to be focused on cutting the spaghetti Frypan gave us.

We all talked and stuff till dinner was over. I talked to Minho and Jo the most while Amy probably talked to Teresa and Thomas more but there were fun moments where we were all talking. A few minutes before dinner ended Gally asked Amy to go on a walk before the bonfire started. Amy nonchalantly said yes but we could all tell how thrilled she was. Thomas and Teresa left next and then I excused myself so Minho could be with Jo.

I didn't really know where to go or anything. Then this child who was noticeably younger than everyone else came up. He had curly hair like Jo's and was on the chubbier side.

"Hi Greenie," he said holding out his hand. "Name's Chuck."

"Hi Chuck," I said shaking his hand.

"Do you need help getting to the bonfire?"

"Yes, actually. I am lost."

"This way," he said walking out of the Homestead. He talked a lot on the way. I stayed quiet and listened. I didn't like being called Greenie. Amy told me that that's what the newbies are called but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

The bonfire was in the direct center of the Glade. It wasn't lit yet. It was set up though so I don't know why. Maybe they were waiting for everyone to be out.

Chuck and I sat and waited for them to light it. They lit it within the next five or so minutes. It was huge. I was shocked the whole Glade wasn't burning down. Chuck kept talking and talking about life in the Glade and how he's been there for about five months.

After awhile chuck left saying he wanted to go bug Thomas. I stay seated and looked around. I only knew a few of the guys from the tour today, mostly Keepers. One guy named Jack came and sat and talked to me. He asked me if I wanted to dance and I declined sweetly. I wasn't sure if I knew how to dance so I thought it was best to play it safe and not do it just in case. He left and about four other guys came and all asked me to dance and I told them all "Thank you but not tonight." Zart came and talked to me. He was probably my favorite of the guys who talked to me tonight. He seemed like he just wanted to be friends. After awhile he too left.

It was getting late and the fire was dying. It would be ending within the hour. I stood up and started walking towards the homestead when I heard someone shout out my name.

I turned around and saw Newt limping towards me.

"Why are you leaving?"

"Oh I'm just tired is all. Though I'd turn in early. It's been a long day."

"Oh that makes sense. Are you sure you don't want to stay? I'll keep you company by the fire."

"That actually sounds nice," I said turning to walk with him back.

We sat down near the fire and talked for a long time. The fire lasted longer than I thought it would. I felt myself nodding off. I can't remember when or how but I woke up the next day in the bed. Teresa and Amy were in hammocks and Jo was next to me on the bed brushing her hair.

"Psst... Jo," I whispered not wanting to wake up the other girls.

She turned around and smiled at me. I was sure I looked crazy given I just woke up. "Hey y/n what do you need?"

"Umm, how did I get here? I don't remember walking here from the fire last night."

"Oh you fell asleep. Newt carried you here and made sure you were alright."

"Oh. That was nice of him. He's a good boy," Jo said turning around smiling.

NEWT'S POV

The bonfire was fun as usual. I hung out with the boys a lot. I talked with Chuck at dinner before I sent him to help y/n who looked lost. Later at the bonfire I was talking with Zart when I saw y/n sitting alone so I sent him to talk to her. She looked happy so I went back to mingling.

I was talking with Alby when I saw y/n leaving. I didn't want her to be alone that night so I went to her and convinced her to stay. We sat by the fire and talked. She was really funny and witty. She had the cutest laugh too. I could tell she was getting tired but she didn't make a move to leave. As the fire was dying we just sat in silence and watched. When I felt this sudden weight on my shoulder I saw she had fallen asleep on it. I laughed to myself.

I put my arm around her and my hand under her legs I made sure to have the back part of the dress under so she wasn't flashing to the whole Glade. I hoisted her up rather easily and walked her to her room. Jo was on the bed and saw me come in with her. She told me to put her on the bed and thanked me for helping out. I said it was nothing and left.

I ran into Amy and Gally holding hands in the hallway. Both seemed rather happy. I think Gally the shuckface finally got up enough courage to kiss her. Took him long enough. I heard Minho also kissed Jo. He liked her but he had a tough time bonding since he's gone most of the day. that slinthead makes moves really quickly.

I wish I had his courage though. But if I did, chances are I wouldn't be here so maybe that's a good thing. If I wasn't here and I finished the job then I wouldn't have met y/n. Something about her just filled me with hope. Even though I just met her she felt so familiar and so comfortable to be around. I wanted to hold on to that for as long as possible.
