Nightmare

I'm running as fast as I can. I am in a dark building with no windows to the outside. I'm going down every hallway I can. I'm panting for breath but I can't be caught. I run to a door and put in the password. I lock the door behind me and look around the room. There is a bed with ropes on it but no people. I sit down on the bed to catch my breath. I look through the window that looks into the hall but my chaser isn't there. I'm suddenly yanked back and-

I'm back to reality. Sweating and panting. I didn't wake up Jo, thank goodness. I slide on a jacket and walk out the building barefoot as quiet as I can. Its a cooler night in the Glade. All the Gladers are camped out in hammocks and on the ground as usual. I've been having trouble sleeping almost every night since coming to the Glade. It's always the same. I'm being chased by a faceless orb and no matter what they catch me.

I go over to the edge of the woods. I can see Newt sleeping a few feet away from me. He looked peaceful. He deserved a little peace. I hadn't forgot what Jo said. I started keeping a closer eye on Newt and she was right. He doesn't smile that much. He always looks so deep in thought. Very rarely he smiles when he's deep in thought but mostly he just looks sad. I wanted to go up and give him a hug.

I thought of his smile as I drifted off to sleep a second time.

I'm back. I'm running and screaming. They're gaining on me. I see a door and I turn toward it. I get through the door and I'm hit by this wave of heat but I don't stop. The world around me is dried desert. I'm running faster and faster, then I fall. My captor is on top of me and I scream. My captors now has a face. They're terribly scarred. They have scabs all over their skin and have bald spots more than they have hair. They are drooling profusely and they have the wildest look in their eyes. Somehow, the creature speaks, but I recognize the voice.

"y/n. y/n! Wake up!"

Newt is on top of me. I'm lying on the forest floor screaming. All the boys are standing around me and I see the girls booking it toward me.

"Y/N what's wrong?" Newt questions.

"Nothing," my voice croaks, raw from screaming. "Sorry, I'm sorry."

"Let's go to the medjacks wing," Jo says as she reaches my side.

"Yes," Newt said scooping me up. "Let's go."

"Newt I can walk myself."

"Shhhh. Rest y/n. I'll take care of you. Don't worry about a thing. I've got you."

He had a face. They've never had a face before. It was horrifying. Just thinking about it, I felt myself begin to hyperventilate. My chest squeezed and my breath came short and quick. I felt myself gasping for air. We got to the Mejacks wing just then and Newt put me down on the bed.

Jo came to me and informed me on how to breathe. She instructed me to calm down and breathe in for four and out for eight. I was able to breathe again. I was also silently kicking myself for not taking the time to appreciate being in Newt's arms.

Newt hasn't left the room yet though. He was standing in the corner with a concerned look on his face. I had seen his face like this before whenever something went wrong. He was like a concerned mother in that way.

Just then Amy came through the door. She took a different approach than Newt did by looking pissed. Her fiery green eyes almost scared me. If she was an interrogator, all she would have to do is give me that look and I'd tell her everything for fear of what she would do.

"Who hurt you?" Amy demanded.

"Woah, Amy. Calm down. We haven't had a chance to ask her questions yet. But since you're here, it would be a great help if you could go get some water."

"I can do it," Newt volunteered.

"NO!" I yelled. My vocal chords were probably screaming at me to stop yelling. I didn't want Newt to leave. He was the only thing keeping me calm. I didn't even realize it until he said he was going to leave and I felt my heart start to beat faster.

Amy looked a little hurt but went to go get the water. This left with Newt and Jo in the room. Jo was looking at my eyes and throat and felt my forehead. Newt just stood in the corner watching. Amy was back in just three minutes later.

"Here," she said offering the cup to Jo who in turn made me drink it. "Teresa wanted to be here but she had already left for the day."

"We understand," Jo smiled. "So y/n, you're not sick, although your throat is very dry but I'm assuming it's just from the screaming. So do you want to tell us the story?"

"Oh it's nothing," my hoarse voice croaked. "I'm sorry to bug everyone."

"Bloody klunk," Newt said. He hasn't said a word the whole time so this was quite the change. "Y/N you were just screaming in fear on the forest floor and it took me about five minutes to wake you up. And every guy just sat there helpless want to help you but not knowing what the shuck to do. So I call klunk."

The room was silent for a moment. Newt and Amy seemed to swap moods. Amy was looking concerned and Newt looked pissed off. Jo was looking at me helplessly.

"He's right y/n. I can't help you unless you tell me what's wrong," Jo said breaking the silence.

"It was nothing," I whispered. "I'm fine. Nothing is wrong. I just screamed for a while. I don't even remember what happened." I was lying. Big time. I don't think I could ever forget that face. How does someone ever create a face like that?

Wait. In dreams people don't see things they haven't seen before. You can only picture a face or place you've seen. That means that I...

"...knew them," I gasped. "I knew them."

"You knew who?" all three asked together.

"What?"

"You just said that you knew them. You knew who?" Newt demanded.

"Oh I think I'm just sleep deprived. I'm sorry," I said.

"Y/N, you look really pale," Jo observed. "Okay, I need evryone to leave the room. Doctors orders."

"Can Newt stay?" I inquired.

"Fine," Jo said. "Amy head to work. I'm sure Gally is wondering where you are. I'll update you later."

Amy nodded and kissed my forehead before leaving. As she walked out Newt came and sat by my bed. I could feel myself nodding off.

"Don't leave," I muttered to Newt. He grabbed my hand and whispered back, "I won't."

For the first time since day one I slept without that nightmare.
