~ A modern Zelink ~
Zelda stared at her phone, longing the text she anticipated. Her hair was pinned up in an intricate braid around her head. She wore a plain blouse with a small, golden Triforce necklace. She bit her lip as she scrolled through her texts.
Still no text, she thought anxiously. She had been waiting for almost an hour for him. Where in Hyrule could he be?
“Miss? Are you ready to order yet?”
“Uh, I’ll give him a few more minutes,” she whispered.
The waiter raised his eyebrow but nodded and walked over to the other tables he was attending to. She waited a few more minutes before finally receiving a text.
Babe, I totally forgot! I’m so sorry, but I won’t be able to make it. I’m stuck in a meeting.
She didn’t even return the text. He didn’t deserve it. His name? Groose. She had a sneaking suspicion that he had been cheating on her for some time. Now, she was almost certain he was. If he loved her, wouldn’t he have at least texted her before the date?
She “dusted” herself off and walked confidently outside to her car. As soon as she sunk into the seat, she allowed the tears to flow. She had been with him for almost a year. They were thinking of moving in together after their wedding. Well, with that fantasy crushed, she shot Groose a text back.
That’s fine. I guess you’ll just be in need of a new girlfriend. No one who cares leaves their date stranded at a restaurant!
She pressed all her anger into the phone, believing that she might end up breaking the screen if she tried hard enough. She hoped he would get the message.
Her phone buzzed shortly after, but she didn’t bother looking at it. She drove home to her apartment and went to the kitchen, finding her friend Impa making cookies.
“Uh oh, Zel. You don’t look very good. You okay?” Impa inquired, knowing Zelda was upset.
“It’s Groose. Why did I think he was the one? This is the third date he has stood me up!”
Impa nodded, pulling Zelda into a soothing embrace. “Boys are jerks,” Zelda vented.
“Well, not all of them. You should give them a chance. I can say confidently that there are some incredible guys out there. You just have to try harder,” Impa stated.
“It’s hard when every boyfriend I’ve had has left me. What should I do, Impa?”
“Well, it’s not my place to give you advice about men, me being even more single than you are. Trust your heart. What does it say?”
“It says I should go to bed and rethink my life,” she joked, the frown remaining on her face.
A soft knock at the door interrupted their talk. Zelda looked at Impa, who shrugged. Zelda walked over to the door and pulled it over. A boy stood in the doorway, a year or two older than her.
“Link? What are you doing here?” Zelda asked in surprise.
His face became a little red, as if he were embarrassed. “Uh, hi. I was just wondering if you guys have an egg I could borrow? My roommate has the car right now, so I can’t really go to the store to get it…” he trailed off.
Impa shouted from the kitchen. “Sure, Link, come on in!”
Zelda awkwardly stepped out of the way while Link walked to the kitchen.
“So, how are you guys doing tonight?”
Impa responded before Zelda opened her mouth. “I’m doing okay, but Zelda’s not doing so hot.”
