~ A Zelink story ~

“Zelda! Wait up!” Link called.

Zelda turned back and stuck her tongue out at him. He sighed in exasperation. He could easily keep up with her, but this was getting ridiculous. He had chased her all over Hyrule Field several times already, and it was only noon. How did she have so much energy?

“Come on! You’ve been at this for 3 hours now. Can we take a break?”

She rolled her eyes. “Fine,” she huffed.

She motioned for him to follow her and walked toward a group of trees. They were far from Hyrule, but nothing they couldn’t handle. Link was the official guard of the princess, which meant wherever she went, he went. Though at times it was less than amusing, he did have a profound respect for her.

“We’ll have lunch here, then I want to show you something.”

Mystery glinted in her eyes. It intrigued Link. He brought out the basket and threw the ingredients in the pot, stirring them constantly until they were cooked. He served her lunch, and they ate in complete silence. Zelda ate delicately as opposed to Link’s more aggressive chewing.

After lunch, Zelda took off into the forest. Link followed closely behind, being careful not to trip on the tangle of roots beneath him. Eventually, they came to a clearing. It was roughly in the shape of a triangle, with a stone in the center. Protruding from the rock the legend stood.

“Is that…” Link trailed off, already knowing what it was.

“Yes, Link. That’s the Master Sword.” She looked at him, seeing the shock in his eyes.

The sword was rusting on the sides with a small green vine wrapping itself around the ancient weapon. Link walked over in awe, and knelt close to it. He reached for the sword, retracting his hand before it touched the sacred sword.

Zelda sat down next to him. “This relic has been safeguarded by my family and I since we placed it here. As you can see, this time of peace has been a little hard on the sword, but we are fortunate that it was able to seal Ganon away all those years ago.”

Link looked at her, noticing that she was watching him. She smiled as he met her gaze. Color flooded to Link’s cheeks, and Zelda’s face lit up. He smiled too, wishing the color would drain from his face faster.

He let his gaze fall to the ground in front of him. A single blue flower bloomed in front of him. He picked it and wove it into Zelda’s hair, noticing her face tinge pink as his fingers brushed against her cheek.

She smiled at him and his childish instincts. She shook her head. Zelda had a sneaking suspicion that Link would never fully grow up. He grinned at her, his boyish charm catching her off guard. She gave a quick smile before finding the ground incredibly interesting.

Link looked up to the sky. “Princess, the sun is getting lower. Do you think it would be best if we headed out now?”

She looked at the sky, following his gaze. She nodded in agreement and rose to her feet. Link leaped up seconds later, following her out of the secluded grove.

After about an hour of awkward silence, Link stood on edge, hearing the snap of a twig. He quickly pushed Zelda behind him, protecting her from the perceived threat. Zelda was confused for a moment but that confusion was quickly replaced with fear. Link’s eyes darted around the wooded area attentively, scanning for danger.
