"Z," I hissed through the communication device. "Where is that distraction? We need to break into the boss's room now!"

"Hold your horses Mr. High-and-Mighty," she replied hastily. "I'm working on it."

I carefully peeked around the corner, slipping my goggles on. No heat signatures near. That was a good sign.

I heard a clatter in the distance and cursed under my breath. Either that was the distraction, or Z got herself into some trouble.

"There's your distraction. Go! M's unlocking the door as we speak."

Her words prompted me to action. I sprang to my feet and crept along the floor in my black clothing. I had a hand reflexively on the small knife I always carried with me. Just in case.

I moved quietly, my boots making no sound on the polished floors. I reached the door and slipped inside, closing the door softly behind me.

The door had a large window set in it, so I would have to be careful that no one noticed me through it. Other than that window, there was nothing else I could see that would give me away.

I rummaged through a nearby filing cabinet; it was quite cluttered with papers. What was I looking for again?

Almost as if she was reading my mind, I heard, "L, remember to get the file on Dr. Harrison. We need the information inside there to combat his latest scheme."

"Right."

I quickly found the file, folded it up, and stuffed it inside the small pouch sitting on my hip. I ducked behind the desk and peeked out. The coast looked clear.

"All clear?"

"Yep. Go!" came the crackling reply.

I bolted to the door and creaked it open. I squeezed through the doorway and ran to the closest corner and hid behind it.

Was I forgetting something?

The door slammed shut. Oops; that's what I forgot...

"L! What was that?" Z's voice resounded.

"Uh, I forgot to close the door quietly on my way out. But I have the files. I'm on my way to the rendezvous point now. ETA 4 minutes."

"Okay, just be extra careful. The noise will have the guards on high alert."

I swallowed. I'd never botched a mission before; this would not be the first. I couldn't let it. I sprinted to the meeting point.

Where was everyone? I slipped around a corner and heard the soft clack of boots on the cement floor.

"I know you are there. Come out with that file, and she won't be hurt."

The voice stepped out of the darkness and into a patch of light filtering in from outside. The masculine figure had a black trenchcoat on and held a knife to Z's throat.

Her eyes darted about with a crazed look to them. Her arms wrapped around the arm holding her captive. Her hair was sticking out of the braid at the side of her head.

My breath caught in the back of my throat. My eyes bulged, and I almost leaped out into the light. But I hesitated. I would compromise the mission.

But Z was more important. I would die before I saw harm come to her.

I stepped out into the light. "Let her go. Now," I growled.

"Ah, I knew you were there. Now, my associate will collect that file from you."

He waved a hand and gestured to a burly man stepping out of the shadows. I tentatively handed the file to him. The other man pushed Z toward me with a rough shove.
