I rubbed my eyes and looked back at my reflection. I didn't see what I thought I saw. Right?

I shook my head, trying to laugh quietly at myself. No, this wasn't happening. Obviously my eyes were playing tricks on me. How silly of me, thinking my reflection moved differently than me. It's just a reflection of light bouncing off of me!
Right?

I breathed deeply and picked up my toothbrush. I squirted some toothpaste onto its bristles, and pulled the brush up to my mouth, brushing my teeth.

Afterwards, I put the toothbrush down and looked back at the mirror. I must've been crazy, but for some reason I put my hand up to it and touched its surface.

And it wasn't a surface at all.

My hand went right through, and my reflection's hand was right below mine, coming over to my side. I flung mine back towards me, and stared at my reflection, which, like me, looked horrified. I stared some more before running out of the bathroom. I breathed heavily as I closed the door, looking back in terror. That did not just happen!

I continued breathing heavily until my breaths slowed down and I came to my senses. It was a good thing my family was playing outside. They would have been a bit worried about me freaking out after coming from brushing my teeth! I slapped and scorned myself. I knew what I saw, but I couldn't bring myself to believe in it. I decided not to tell my family. They'd probably think I was crazy, anyway.

I shook off the creepy feeling of what had just happened and went outside with my family.

"Hey!" called my little brother, "You finally woke up." His twin sister came up right next to him.

"What's up, sleepbrain?!" she teased.

"Oh, hello, dear!" my mother exclaimed, coming to a stop on her bike, right in front of me, "Pega's waiting for you in her stall."

I smiled. Pega was my horse's nickname. I had gotten her last year for Christmas, and I'd named her Pegasus because riding her felt like flying. She was a beautiful dapple grey mare, with sparkling eyes and a silky, flowing mane.

"Thanks, Mom!" I yelled, and ran off to the backyard. I unlatched the gate and went straight to Pega's stall. I hugged her, she nuzzled me, and I hopped on her graceful back.

We ambled up towards the front yard, where we trotted around my siblings, who rode along with us on their scooters. We scared the hay out of my dad, who had been doing some gardening. We laughed, playing around until it was time to go inside for lunch.

But what happened in the bathroom was always at the back of my mind.

Scaring me.

Haunting me.

Not letting me forget.
