"Why didn't that work?" my doppelgänger and I asked.

"I don't know," her mother answered honestly. She picked me up, helping me towards her daughter. We waited silently. She touched her hand lightly to the surface.

"I feel it - like it's thicker now or something - maybe - I don't know," she muttered to us, baffled.

"Do you think it would work if (I/she) went through a different mirror?" my doppelgänger and I asked. We looked at each other. This was getting freaky.

"Uuumm..." the woman thought for a moment. We stood there impatiently for a minute.

"Well?" we asked.

"I'm thinking!" her mother asked, throwing her arm through the air at us before returning to thought.

"Ooh! Yes!" she snapped her fingers, "I've got it! Hop on the counter and roll through that one!" She started clearing things away.

"Uh, won't that be a tight squeeze?" we asked.

The lady sighed, "Well do you want to go back or not?! This is your chance."

She put some hand soap carefully on the ground, "Wanna help me?!"

"You're taking this so well," my double commented to her mother, "Why aren't you as weirded out as me?" I spoke the last sentence with her. She looked back at me, removing the hairbrush from the counter.

"I've had this theory for years," she sighed again, pushing back her short, dark brown hair and its two pink and blue streaks, "and I just had a dream about it, too. I - well don't get me wrong, I'm still all freaked out and everything, but... I just - guess my imagination makes it easier for me." She shrugged shakily and pulled down a box of q-tips.

*******somewhere else...*******

"There's been a disturbance, sir."

"A disturbance? As in someone passed through?!"

"Yes, sir."

"HOW COULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?!! *sigh* Take care of it."

"How, sir?"

"Alert the experts. They'll know what to do."

"Yes, sir."

*hurried footsteps*

(Muttering to self)
"Ugh, how? Years and years. Very few times before me, but on my watch? Never. No one shall remember this."

*******back in the original setting*******

"Alright, that's it!" She brushed her hands together, looking back at us, then specifically to me, "You ready?"

I looked over at the mirror. My mother seemed to be taking similar action to this one, understanding just as well as her. I turned to the one in this world, nodding.

"Thank you," I said to them. I hopped onto the counter, looking at my patient, loving mother. I got down and carefully started to roll...

"Ow!" I screamed, rubbing my shoulder. I sat up, looking hopelessly down on the other two. My double was rubbing her arm as well, as if my pain had affected her. I realized then that she had screamed with me.

"What do we do now?" we asked .

Her mother groaned, "I think that other mirror might have - uh - I don't know, thickened too or something. We could get a new mirror?" she sounded unsure.

"Great let's go!" we smiled, starting to speed-walk out of the room.

"Hold it!" she called, "I'm not going until I get this thing finished." She smirked at us.

We both realized what to do, trudging back into the bathroom for the hair. My mom was in the mirror there. She realized what we were doing and got the hair herself, deciding to finish up as well.

Would I ever make it back? I wondered.
