Michael opened the door to the apartment to reveal Calum on the couch with his girlfriend Teagan. The blonde is curled up under his friends arm as they watch a movie. The pair has been together for about a year, and she is good match for Calum. “Hey dude!” Calum calls at the sound of the door.
“Hey. Hi Teagan.”
“Hey Mike!” Her and Michael have always gotton along well. “We’re watching The Avengers, wanna join?”
“Nah I’m just going to head to bed. Thanks though.” He retreats to his back bedroom.
Rose uses her spare key to get into Luke’s apartment. He is laying on the couch watching some dumb show on TV. “Finally. Where were you?”
“Out. Why?” She is taken back by his over protectiveness.
“I was worried! You never came back after the meeting.”
“Why is that such a big deal?”
“I thought you had…” his voice trails off realizing how much of a jerk he sounds like.
“Thought I had what? Gone out on a drinking binge?” Luke stays silent. “Thanks for the faith, Luke.” She stomps down the hall to gather a few of her things.
“Rose stop. Please. Rosaline!” Luke’s voice gets louder as he follows her. “I didn’t mean it like that. I was just worried ok?”
“Whatever, Luke.” She pushes past him and back towards the front door leaving him standing in shock. Back in her car Rose slams both hands on the steering wheel, sitting in the silence. Finally she turns the car on and cranks the radio, heading towards her own apartment. Inside she heads straight for her room, craving the comfort of her own bed. Stripping down to her underwear she finds one of her dads old t-shirts and slips it over her head. Under the layers of blankets and sheets she’s alone. The silence of the house overwhelms her. Rose closes her eyes to try and sleep, but nothing seems to be working. All she can think about is her fight with Luke, and how easy it would be to prove him right. Grabbing her phone she flips through her contacts to a new number added that night. “Michael?”
“Rose? Is everything ok?” His voice is scratchy from sleep.
“No, I – I want to drink. Really bad.” They had learned in the meeting earlier that day that cravings only last for 90 seconds. She just needed to occupy herself for a minute and a half.
“Ok, listen. Stay strong. You don’t need to drink.” Taking a deep breath she listens to his words. “Let’s get your mind off it. Did you have a good time on our date?” Rose smiles to herself in the dark room.
“It was not a date!”
“Oh it so was. We got food, we talked about things and got to know each other. I consider that a date. A great one at that.” She could practically hear his smile through the phone, causing her heart to flutter. “Admit it! It was a great date!” Michael pesters her.
“Fine!” Rose gives in. “It was a very nice date. Is there going to be a second one to top it?”
“Possible. If you want, I mean.” His confidence falters a bit as he realizes she might not even want him.
“Um, Michael? I think the fact that I called you at two am to talk me down is evidence enough for a second date.”
“Oh, ok good.” He lets out a sigh of relief, running a hand through his messy white blonde hair.
“Will you come somewhere with me tomorrow after work?”
“Sure, what time are you off?”
“Five,” her voice straining as she grows near sleep.
“Ok, I’ll stop by around then. Rose, I think you need to go to bed.” There is a light laugh behind Michael’s words, making them sound far away and dreamy.
“Alright. Thank you, Michael.” He hums in response.
“Anytime, Rose. Goodnight, beautiful.” With his calming words playing over in her head, stay strong, Rose drifts off to sleep.
