Chapter 1

Bre stutters, "Re-Really?"

"Yea. Really." Uncle McGraw sighs.

"This is crazy." Mom says under her breath. I nod in agreement.

"Y'all have guns right?" Uncle Dallas asks.

"Ya. Daddy has some in the gun case." I say.

"And y'all know how to shoot?"

"Um.. Walt does, Mom does and I kinda do." I answer again.

"Good. Here." Uncle McGraw hands me a camouflage orange hunting knife.

I stare at it for a minute.

"Whenever you see one of them." Uncle Dallas takes a moment to point at the dead 'zombie' bodies on the ground, "Make sure to do damage to the brain."

"How do you know this stuff?" Mom asks.

Oh. She's never been around to see him play Black Ops Zombies has she?

"Video games." My 2 uncles answer simply at the same time.

I sigh and look to Mom who has a 'Seriously?!' Look plastered on her face.

"Now-we only kill the zombies." Uncle Dallas says. "Do NOT kill humans."

We all nod as Uncle McGraw makes his way back to the house.

"What should we call them?" Bre asks scarcely, "Zombies sound sorta babyish."

I nod and so does Walt.

"What else do we call them?" Uncle Dallas asks.

"Fleshies." I answer quickly, "Fleshies."

Uncle Dallas nods, "Okay. Fleshies."

Uncle McGraw comes back out with 2 guns and a box of ammo,

"There are 2 more in the house." He says.

Uncle McGraw hands Mom and Walt one. He goes back in the house and comes out again 2 minutes later. He gives Uncle Dallas one and keeps one to himself.

"You girls use your knives." Uncle Dallas instructs. Me and Bre both nod.

"So.. What do we do with them?" Walt points to the 3 body's on the ground.

Aunt Carter.

Gracelynn.

And Kaden.

Mom breaks down again and so does Bre. Uncle McGraw looks like he was trying not to cry.

"We can give them a proper burial." Uncle Dallas whispers as he looks at a shovel leaning against the house.

I nod along with others and wipe stray tears.

•••

After an hour or two we finally had the 3 bodies buried.

There were so many tears.

My light pink dress was stained with dark red blood and so was my knife.

I wiped the knife off on my dress and closed it, slipping it in my side pack.

"This is actually happening." I giggle like it's the most funny thing in the world. "The apocalypse." I start to giggle some more to when I can't stop.

"Kayla!" My Mom calls.

I look at her quickly and then down again.

I move closer to Bre and sit down next to her on the grass.

"Where's Dall?" That's what Bre calls Uncle Dallas.

I shrug and look at Uncle McGraw, "In the house... Looking for things we may need." He answers as he stares into space.

I nod and pull at the grass on the ground.

"I wonder who's all alive." Walt mutters, "What about Daddy?"

I look up. Daddy's at work in California.

I may never see Daddy again.

I start actually crying for the first time today.

I am a Daddy's Girl.

Always was.

Bre sat her hand on my back and rubbed comforting circles.

After what felt like forever, I stopped crying and stood up as Uncle Dallas came out with 2 duffel bags full.

He handed Mom one and kept one on himself.

"So where are we going?" Bre asks.

"We don't know yet." Uncle McGraw answers.

There was a moment of silence.

"Let's head towards Atlanta. Maybe there's something there." Mom suggests, "Like the CDC?"

"What's the CDC?" Walt asks for all us kids.

"It's where they figure out a cure for fatal sicknesses." Mom explains.

"I Doubt there's a cure for this." I hear Walt mutter.

I nod.

"I agree." Uncle McGraw mutters.

"Let's go towards Atlanta. But not the CDC." He suggests, glancing back through the rear view mirror at us.

"Plan?" Uncle Dallas asks.

Most of us nod or reply "Plan" back.

"So we go to Atlanta and decide from there." He concludes.

"How long till we get there?" Bre asks after a while of driving. It was already getting dark and we had passed tons of Fleshies.

"About 5 minutes sweet heart." Uncle McGraw answers.

We make it there and park on the side of the road.

The road was blocked for miles.

"How do we get around?" Mom asks sadly.

"We caint." Uncle Dallas answers.

I sigh, "Dead end."

"It's gonna be alright. We'll protect you." Uncle McGraw smiles at me and I attempt to smile back.

"So what do we do know?" Bre asks.

"I don't know." Uncle Dallas mutters.

I start to hear a rumbling sound and a bunch of screams.

"A heard?" Mom asks quickly.

"No." Uncle Dallas quickly snaps back.

We look above our heads as we hear a long screech.

A torpedo flew into the city of Atlanta and sets it off in fire and different explosions.

"There goes our last chance." I hear Bre mutter.

I sigh under my breath, "Where to now?"
