                        ~Chapter I Drive~

As soon as the line went dead, I ran.

I ran outside to the school parking lot, some of the security guards tried to stop me, but I kept going. I needed to go see my dad. I needed to go see if he was okay, I needed him to be okay. He was the only thing I had left. When I got to my car, an old Honda Civic that I had worked two summers to buy, I put my keys into ignition and prayed that it started without a problem. I turned the keys and it sputtered to life only to die a few seconds later.

"Are fucking kidding me!" I shouted while hitting the steering wheel with my hands in anger. I got out of the car and popped the hood. When I took a look inside, I cussed again. There was smoke coming out of the engine.

"This is absolutely fantastic." I said sarcastically looking up towards the sky. "Please be okay." I prayed softly closing my eyes. I heard footsteps coming from behind me, I froze remembering what my father was talking about, and then I shook my head. It was silly, there was no such thing as-

I jumped as someone touched my shoulders. Quickly I turned around and saw a smirking Veronica.

"You know that isn't funny." I said monotonously.

"Really", she replied, "Because I thought it was pretty funny." I  ignored her and turned around to look at my car somehow hoping that the car would fix itself if I stared hard enough.

"The Teacher told me to come get you." She said crossing her arms. I scoffed and continued looking at my engine. "She said if you don't come back you're going to get a referral and possible suspension." I turned around to look at her.

"I don't care, my dad comes before anything at the moment, so I really don't give a damn about a stupid referral, and or a suspension." We both stand there in an awkward silence until I turn around and start walking to the trunk to retrieve my tools to try and fix my problem.

"Wait," Veronica stops me, "Do you need a ride?" she asks, I looked at her in amusement. "Don't look at me like that, I mean it."

"Really?" I spit out sarcastically.

"Yes, really." The awkward silence returns until Veronica decides to break it.

"Look," She starts, "I know that you and I don't get along anymore, but I'm not blind or stupid and I know what it feels like to be...to be scared about a parent." She ended quietly. I was well aware of what she was talking about. Her mother died when she was eight in an accident, nobody knew if she'd make it, but in the end it didn't matter because she left anyway. I also knew that the more time I spent here trying to fix my car, the more time I wasted getting to my dad.

"Aren't you going to get in trouble?" I asked, "I mean the teacher did send you out here to get me." Veronica scoffed, and rolled her eyes.

"Do you need that ride or not?" she asked again, annoyed. I debated it again in my head before I nodded. Taking her keys out from her purse, she motioned to me to follow her. When we got to her car, a red Toyota Camry, she unlocked it, and we both stepped in.

"So, where to?" Veronica asked putting the key into the ignition and twisting it. The car purred to life as the air condition blasted warm air into our faces.

"The CDC. My dad is a janitor there." I said looking out the window while clicking the seat belt into place.

"The CDC?" she asked skeptically, I nodded. "It seems like a zombie apocalypse is about to break out since your dad called from the CDC and you seem scared." she joked. I glared at her, and she stopped smiling. "Sorry." Veronica apologized as she backed out of her parking space. I didn't answer, I just stared out the window.
