"I'll never leave you, brother. Not really,"

Hey hey hey!

Oh my, I cried so much when I wrote this chapter! It may be short, but very sad nonetheless. I'm normally terrible at making anything bad happen to my characters when I'm writing stories, so I was surprised I could do this to poor Bethany. Still, I hope you like it!

Ps. Please don't hate me for this! It just happened, okay? :(

I stormed into my estate, and there, sitting by the fireplace with tears streaming down her face, was Bethany. I run over and hug her tightly, afraid that if I let go she would suddenly disappear.

"Bethany... I don't understand, I..." I stammered, grasping onto her shaking hands as I knelt beside her. She shook her head weakly, her messy black hair falling to cover her eyes. I realised this was the first time she had cried since Carver died, even when she had almost been killed by the darkspawn's taint. She had been so strong.

"Hush, brother. It isn't your fault." She comforted, stroking my hair as tears fell mercilessly down my cheeks. As if it was me who needed comforting.

"It's so soon... Way too soon. Are you sure it's..." I trail off, not wanting to even speak the words. It couldn't be true, it made no sense. I could barely hear our companion's quiet arrivals as they all silently watched from the doorway. I was sitting so close to the fireplace that my back was surely burning, but I couldn't bare to move from where I was now, my chin rested on her knee.

"I asked the other Grey Wardens, and they had no idea what was going on. They even took me to King Alistair, but even he has never heard of such a thing. This is just how it is. I leave for Orzimar at dawn." Bethany hung her head, her voice breaking on the last sentence. She started to sob for real now, finally letting out the emotions that she had held back all these years as she fell apart. Varric walked over to us slowly, resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder, unable to do much else. The others followed, each desperately trying to convince her that she was not alone only through small , meaningless gestures. She looked up at Varric, managing a tiny smile.

"I guess we've run out of sunshine, huh?"

---------------------------------------------

Shutting the door behind us, Bethany turned to Fenris. The sky was clouded over and a thick layer of fog smothered the ground.

"Take good care of him, won't you?" She asked, placing a hand lightly on his shoulder. Even his eyes looked watery last night. He nodded stiffly.

"I will keep him out of trouble, yes." He replied softly, his throat sounding tight. Bethany pulled him into a brief hug, pulling away again before it got uncomfortable for him. She chuckled slightly, and having shed every tear she could last night, she was unable to cry anymore.

"I'm pretty sure you can't keep my brother out of trouble. It has a way of finding him. Just keep him safe." Fenris managed to pull up the corner of his mouth a tiny bit, probably more for her sake than his. I smile softly, reaching out and intertwining our fingers. He smiled a little more at that, shifting to stand closer to me, a small brush forming on his cheeks. Bethany smirked.

"I'll see you at the Maker's side, brother. I'll give our parents and Carver your love." She took a few steps backwards, as if she didn't want to turn her back on us, never to see us again. I wheeze out a quiet thank you, a giant lump settling in the back of my throat.

And then, as if the last few seconds were in slow motion, she turned to leave. Her hair swirled in the light wind, several locks plaited in intricate braids that it took Merril nearly all night to finish. As she began to walk away, I saw that sway in her hips that she used to have when things were better, before Lothering's downfall and before the blight. When she was happy.

The mist finally engulfed Bethany as she set out to answer her calling.

Only a short one, guys. I just didn't want to leave that cliffhanger hanging much longer! Please vote and comment because it makes me really happy!

How can I make it up to you?

Lots of love and tissues,
