they continued to fight, we learned more about the situation as they talked about it. bill blamed althea, althea denied, he said it was true, althea now believes him and hates herself, and bill tries to take it back.

"at least i don't pretend that there's nothing going on between us!" bill yelled. we all turned to him. he didn't stutter but that was mildly our concern. from the other end of the table, stan was wide-eyed. "what went on between you guys?" he asked.

we all put down what we were doing, desperate for love within the group. this was our chance of love again in the losers. "w-we k-kissed." bill confessed.

we all expected nothing to come out of our mouths. we all cheered, instead. we laughed and started talking again. bill and althea didn't seem to think their situation was fixed but it was a start.

slowly, everyone had something good happen to them within the group. bev and ingrid talked again, stan made jokes and rolled his eyes instead of reading the book he wasn't interested in, eddie was less anxious as we all talked, ben's poem won the derry poetry competition.

i still felt that missing part of my heart. at the end of the day, the losers left happily and i left on my bike. they were all smiling, and finally, bill had his arm around althea.

i looked into my bike basket and found a cassette with a note taped to it.

the cassette read cold shoulder.

the note wasn't long, it read:

it's not everyday that you
find your lover pretty
when she gives you
the cold shoulder

i was curious as to how richie thought that i could miss his messy writing. i knew how his writing looked like, he had written that note.

i excitedly take out the cassette from my walkman and replace it with richie's cassette as i bike away from the school.

the tape started with everybody wants to rule the world. it continues with hong kong garden, life on mars, africa, and so on.

at the middle of life on mars, i reach the barrens. for once, i don't cry. i smile while listening to the songs richie picked. i continue to listen as i sit alone at the barrens.

i look down at the note, reading it over and over in disbelief. i'm richie's lover.

i hear the grass rustle beside me but i don't mind it.

"hey, baby." a voice says. i look up to see richie tozier in the flesh. i don't feel mad enough to ignore him, so i tease him instead.

"cold shoulder, huh?" i smirk at him. his cheeks turn into a deep pink and his eyes grow wide.

"i-i... what do you mean?" he nervously chuckles. "it's not everyday that you find your lover pretty," i start and bite my bottom lip.

"w-wuh-when she gives you the cold shoulder." richie whispers. "so, my lover," i tease.

"shut up," richie groans. "you are my lover, okay?"

i blush madly at richie's confession. "now, let me listen to some of that."

i hand him one of my earphones and we sit in silence to the music. we tap our feet in beat with the music and smile at each other. we sat like this for hours, even until we both decided to go home. we listened to the tape while walking our bikes home. i would stare at him and he'd catch me before i'd look away. he'd stare at me and bite his lip and i'd pretend not to see him.

we almost parted ways when arriving at my house, both of us being in the silence that was once covered by the music. "rest up, lover." richie smiled.

"doesn't have the same charm as 'rest up, buttercup' but i'll take it." i smiled at richie. "alright, lover. see you tomorrow." he smiled back.

thus, the silence comes back between us. both of us not moving and admiring each other. richie lunges at me and kisses my lips. a short but amazing kiss that left a tingle on my lips. he held my face in his hands and stared into my eyes.

"goodnight, richie." i whispered. both of us were blushing as we parted ways. i walked up the steps to my porch with a bounce to my step as i watched his smile never leave his face.
