As the sun barely broke over the mountains, a small white building rose vastly on a path of green nearby. I listened for the hurrying footsteps of other children, desperate to not come late to class. It was not an enormous school, but just the right size to give proper education to the children in Avonlea. I found it sparking the memories of my previous life, and the school I had gone to before. It was a delightful sight for sore eyes, and as the nervousness vanished, a thrilling and exciting feeling took its place.
"Here, allow me," said Gilbert as he gestured for the door. I flashed a smile and allowed him to politely open the door. A set of bickering voices filled my ears as I devoured the sight of the classroom. It was rather small, with a furnish in the middle to keep the warmth and a large board in the front. Students and new classmates met my gaze; I felt studied where I stood. However, I caught the sight of Diana with her blue dress and ribbon that simply put a vast smile on my face.
Gilbert cleared his throat sudden, and I spun my head, only to meet his eyes perfectly near mine. He took some time to speak, the iris of his eyes sparkling just the right amount to make me flush. There was a peak of a smile, a soft one that vanished slightly as he parted his lips to speak. "I- "He started, his cheek glowing red. I found myself on clouds, oh how the feeling made me tumble.
"-Was just wondering, if I could take your coat" He offered, his voice so low that I was the only one who could hear. His eyes drooped as if he was anxious for my reply, and I found it utterly difficult to not stutter over my words as I had no idea what to answer.
"Yes, yes 'course" I broke the eternity of our stare and undressed my coat from my shoulders.
"Thank you," I told as I handed it to him.
"Aurora!" A loud shriek sounded through the classroom. I turned to catch Anne with her bright smile as she waved for me to join her. My eyes peaked behind her to a crowd of girls that made all my fluttering feeling vanish. There they stood, with their arms crossed over their chest, eyebrows raised high as if I had stepped into the classroom and committed a great crime. I understood nothing but hurried over to Anne.
"My names Aurora Lewis-Cuthbert. It's nice to meet you" I greeted; however, it was met with the frostiest gesture as they all except Diana and Anne vanished past me without a smile to share. My stomach turned and I did not understand where I could have gone wrong. I decided to not follow and ask, as I did not want to make a scene, but simply asked Diana who seemed rather concerned for the girls.
"Was it something that I said?" I asked her.
"It's, it's probably nothing" She straightened her ribbon.
"It's nice to see you again" She greeted me, throwing her hands surprisingly around my neck. I turned to the side as my curiosity for the group behaviour caught up with me, and a snarky glare from one I learned to be Josie Pye twisted my emotions. She had hair like mine and was dressed in purple. Diana sounded the name of the two others, the smaller girl dressed in a pink dress and with hair that reminded me of a cornfield was Ruby, and the last one in green was Tilly. Her hair was a brown colour, like bark on a tree. They were all well-dressed girls and seemed to come from some wealth. I took notice of how they seemed to be colour coded and I peeked down on my orange dress; wondering if it was the colour I was assigned to in the social group if I ever became a part of it.
Then as it could not have gotten any stranger, a dark shadow interrupted the sun through the windows and the class grew absolutely quiet. I did not understand the silence, but as Diana's frightened eyes widened, and Anne crumbled into a small figurine, I turned to face an odd-looking man. He was much older than any of us, so I assumed him to the teacher, the fear I saw in my classmates, however, shocked me. "Now who are you?" He asked in a sharp tone.
