In the abyss of a short-waking moment, Y/n lay there with her arm over her eyes. The grass was green like emeralds and the sun shined brighter than ever. It truly felt like spring was approaching.

Ivar lay next to her, sitting up on his elbows, and watched her as if she were the most beautiful treasure.

"Like what you see?" She smirked. She poked her eyes out from under her arm. Ivar only shrugged and began picking at pieces of grass.

"I see a lot of things." He replied.

"What kind of things?"

Ivar shrugged again. Only this time, he leaned over and proceeded to remove a piece of loose grass from her h/c braided hair.

"Bad ones. Good ones." He paused. "Beautiful ones."

Y/n sat up and brushed off anything remaining on her torso.

"We should get back." Y/n said. But Ivar clearly ignored her. She said it again, this time nudging him in the shoulder.

"Let's just,' he began. "—stay here for a little bit longer.

"But Aslaug will have my head if I don't get you back on time." Y/n protested.

Ivar chuckled. "Then she will have both of our heads."

Y/n could already tell she wasn't going to get Ivar to budge, even if she begged him. But she knew at the same time, he was wanting to stay back for the sake of attention from his mother, only for her to be then lectured and yelled at.

But it had always been like that, her sticking up for him or taking his blame or fighting for him even when he really didn't deserve it. Hvitserk had always told her she should stop doing it, and realize Ivar could do things for himself. Yet she had always felt like she had to; practically baby him that is. As if he wasn't already being babied by his mother.

They had been friends since they were children, and she had always been known as the fragile maiden. Though and never once had she even thought of abandoning him, and if she ever did, she'd break his heart. Plus, she knew how hard it was for him; being  a cripple.
But over the past year, she's has found herself drawn more and more away from him. She and Hvitserk have been seeing each other for several weeks now, she's becoming more mature, her battle skills are improving, and to top it off, she's with child. And Ivar had yet to find out.

"Ivar, I just want you to know that no matter what, you and I will always be there for each other. Even when we've moved on and—we're off going to high cites and raiding towns."

Ivar didn't say anything. Only staring at the sky blankly. But Y/n desperately wanted him to say something, anything. And she held her breath before rolling over on her side.

"Ivar, I'm with...child." She blurted.

He sighed. "By whom?" He never took his eyes off of the sky.

"Hvitserk."

The two sat in silence, a long one that is . It seemed soon. It seemed guilty. But Y/n had to tell him, rather than than him finding out from someone else.

"Well," Ivar finally spoke up. "Don't let him forget about his uncle Ivar."

"Never." Y/n smirked. "But you aren't angry?"

"No, like you said, no matter what, we stay as close as we always were."

But Ivar knew deep down that his heart had been truly crushed like a broken shield. He had always loved Y/n more than anyone he'd ever met. She was kind, she was understanding, she didn't judge him, ever. And she was there. So Ivar lay there, struggling not to look at the beauty that could've filled in the hole in his chest. Thinking about what he could of had, and what could've been.

Ugh, sorry this is bad—but it's just a short one cuz if you didn't know (you probably didn't) I've been like on a century long hiatus. Swy, they'll get better. :)
