Elias stopped to catch his breath, ''a little longer and we should be far enough to rest, you doing okay?" he asked, looking down at the girl in his arms.

''Yeah... you're the one doing all the work... you could just leave me you know...'' she told him.

He sighed, ''stop so easily wanting to give up your life, be lucky you have one, some people lose theirs when they don't want to,'' he flicked her nose softly, ''remember that,'' he took in a deep breath, continuing the long escape.

'When did we become so close? Why is he being so nice... he could just leave me and escape alone, why wont he...' she looked up at him, his face covered in sweat, his blue eyes filled with worry, 'why do they look so human... when they're not... I hate it... Why does he act like he cares, why hasn't he drank my blood?!' she asked herself, feeling a little annoyed by all her unanswered questions.

''Hey...'' she spoke.

''Yeah?'' Elias asked.

''Why is your lip bleeding?" she asked, reaching up without thinking and wiped the dripping blood away.

''Uhm... well...'' he stuttered, surprised by her actions, his cheeks turning a little red, ''it's nothing,''.

''I don't understand you,'' she whispered.

''And I don't understand you, so I guess we're even,'' he replied.

''What don't you understand?"

''Well, why do you say you hate vampires, but help me?'' he asked.

Her eyes widened as her cheeks turned red from embarrassment, ''that's what I don't understand either! You just seem so different from Harlock, you don't seem like a vampire, you seem more human than anything, and what you told me the first day I was with you ... about not being able to choose the life you wanted. I don't know I guess it just stuck,'' she sighed. ''I just...I feel bad I guess... that I called you heartless. The way you act just confuses me to no end, you care, you're nice, you don't drink human blood. And for some reason I feel like no matter how much I try to learn I'll never know anything about you,''.

Elias stopped, setting her down on the tree, ''this should be far enough for now, it'll maybe take them a couple of hours so get ready to go in thirty minutes,'' he took off his jacket and threw it over her, ''put it on, it should mask your scent for a while,'' he sat near the base of giant tree branch. ''if you want to learn more about me, just ask. I'll tell you whatever you want,''.

''Really?'' Emma asked, sitting down next to him, putting on his jacket, which was two sizes too big.

''Yep,'' he grinned at her.

Emma thought for a second, ''hm... why did you make Harlock take Joyce and not me? You could have taken Joyce, right?".

''Well, if you went with Harlock, he would probably try to drink your blood, that's obvious,''.

''What about Joyce? Wont he do it to her too?" she brought her knees up to her chest, placing her head on them, looking over at him.

''She likes him, there's nothing I can do to stop him, and if it were you, I can't stop him if he tries anything,''.

''Why are you so worried about me?" she asked, looking over his face for a reaction.

''Well you see,'' he nervously cleared his throat, his cheeks burning a bright red, ''you should get some sleep, we'll be leaving soon,'' he quickly changed the subject.

Emma frowned, ''don't avoid the question! You said you'd answer whatever I wanted!"

Elias stood up, turning away from her,"mmm.. fine,'' he sighed, "when I first saw you... in the village, I couldn't take my eyes off you, I still don't know why. It's probably because of your blood, but in the moment only you stood out," he continued lost in thought. "You were so captivating, you looked right at me and I thought my heart would explode, that's never happened to me before. I wish we could have meet under better circumstances...when I was human... Now I just want to protect you, I feel like I need to.." his voice trailed off as he realized what he had said.
