Tris's POV
I hate seating plans. The whole class chatters around me while i sit here in silence. Christina is next to Lynn, Marlene is next to Uriah, Zeke is next to Will and Shauna is next to Lauren. Where am I? In the back row next to an empty seat. I swear my math teacher, Ms. Mathews hates me, i don't even know what i did. i get good grades, i don't really talk in class and i get all my homework handed in on time, what else can she ask from me?
"Okay Class," Ms. Mathews shouts, but nobody stops talking.
"Okay Class!" she shouts louder this time and she gets the classes attention.
"Finally," she states, giving me the death glare like it was all my fault.
"We're having a new student join us in a few minutes," she states as the chatter in the classroom starts back up again.
I honestly can't care less about new kids, they just get abducted by the first group that can get to them and they join them. all new kids are the same.
"Beatrice, he will be sitting with you." she adds.
Never mind about not caring, i do care, a lot now. And it's a boy too. I have no problem with boys, i just can't befriend them easily, that's all. The only reason that Zeke, Uriah and Will sit with us is because they were friends with the others first.
Ms. Matthews glances at her watch right as someone knocks on the door.
"Right on time, come in." she calls over to him.
As he walks in, i observe him and his features. It's not strange for me to do that, i do this every time there is a new kid.
The first thing i notice are his eyes, he has piercing, dark blue eyes. I notice his hooked nose, and that he only wears black clothes. he is better looking than your average new kid.
I stop staring so I don't seem weird. It's not like he's looking this way anyway, he's having a conversation with Ms. Matthews.
I concentrate on my classwork until i hear Ms. Matthews say my name. I look up and see her pointing the new kid towards my desk. He starts walking towards me and i continue my work. He arrives at the desk, places his worksheet on the desk and sits down next to me.
"Hey," he whispers to me.
"Hi?" i respond, a little confused why he's talking to me.
"Can you help me with this?" he asks me, pointing at the first question on the page.
"Are you going to need help with every question?" i ask.
He nods at me and chuckles.
"Miss Prior, please stop distracting your fellow peers." Ms. Matthews yells from the front of the classroom.
a few people break into laughter and my cheeks turn red. i continue working on the math equations and ignore the new boy.
"I'm sorry." he whispers to me.
I mouth "it's okay" so i won't get in trouble by Ms. Matthews for 'distracting my fellow peers' who definitely didn't talk to me first.
The bell for the end of class rings and everyone starts rushing to exit the classroom.
"Hold on a second, Miss Prior," Ms. Matthews calls out at me.
"I need to speak to you before you go to lunch." she says, gesturing for me to come to her desk.
I walk away from my desk, leaving the new kid to pack his stuff away. I arrive at Ms. Matthews desk and she starts glaring at me madly.
"Miss Prior, for distracting the newest, who is most behind in the content we're studying you get detention tomorrow after school. don't be late." she yells at me.
"Yes Ms. Matthews, i'm sorry for-" i apologise until i'm interrupted.
"Ms. Matthews, it was my fault. i asked her for help with my work." i hear the voice of the new kid from behind me.
"You don't have to take the blame for her, it's your first day and Beatrice is always disrupting someone in my class." she reasons with him.
"I'm quite sure, Ms. Matthews." he says, trying to get through to her.
"Well then... You two our free to go," she says, gesturing towards the door.
I rush out the exit before she can change her mind. As I exit the classroom, i feel a hand clench on my shoulder. I look behind me to see the new kid.
"Is Ms. Matthews always like...?" he holds his fingers behind his head and makes devil horns.
"Yeah, she is always like that." i say, copying his devil horns.
"I'm Four, by the way." he says.
"Four? like the number?!?" i ask.
"Like the number." Four says while nodding.
"Well, Four... Would you like to sit with my group at lunch?" i ask, waiting for his response.
"Sure. I mean, I've got nobody else to sit with, so..." he responds.
Yes, inviting him to sit with us was not a complete and utter failure like i thought it would be. So, now is the part where i survive lunch with him without embarrassing myself in front of him.
I lead him to the cafeteria and show him to the table that me and my friends sit at.
"Oh, looks like Tris stole the new kid!" i hear Christina exclaim.
"Please sit, the boy to girl ratio in this group is not good!" Uriah begs, as Four takes a seat at the table with us.
"Name?" Shauna asks him.
"Four" he says. I have to stop myself from asking for the meaning behind the name, because you don't have a name like Four for absolutely no reason.
"Were One, Two and Three taken?" Christina jokes.
Four rolls his eyes at her. i can't help but do the same eye roll. Christina tells the worst jokes.
By the end of lunch, Four and the others all seem to be getting along. The only person in the group who was quieter than usual was Lynn, but nobody else. I guess sitting with Four won't be as bad as i thought it would be. Other than Ms. Matthews blaming me for everything, i think this will all be fine
