Life Turned Upside Down

"Are you even listening?" My younger sister asked. Her twin and my younger brother narrowed his brown eyes at me. Only eight but Roxy, a little firecracker with long brown hair and the biggest star  bright green eyes you have ever seen, could put you in your place. Riley, an overprotective little dude with a glare that could make most grown men shut up, all ways made sure his twin was heard. "Isabella!" My sister snapped to grab my attention. My mouth turned up a bit in the corners as I tried to hide the small smile that was coming onto my face.

"Of course," I said as I turned another page in my book that had recently captured my attention. That's just how I was if my head was in a book that I really enjoyed nothing, and I do mean nothing, could stop me from finishing it. Well, nothing except two little angles trying to get my full attention. Honestly, I had no idea what they where talking about. I loved the two darlings more then I could love anything on this earth but I swear Roxy gossiped more then any ten people I knew and Riley got ticked if someone didn't listen to her. He was tall and strong for a kid his age so kids their age tended to listen to him.

"Oh really?" Her high pitch voice asked sarcastically while rolling her eyes. I sighed and placed my book down knowing I wasn't going to get any reading done until her story was over.

"Please continue," I said but my smile was gentle as I looked at her. Riley smiled at me, happy that they had my full attention.

"I was saying, before you so rudely ignored me," A chuckle left my mouth at this, "that you should talk to Dad about getting Riley and I a puppy for our Twins Day," Roxy said. Twins Day was just what they called their birthday.

"A Puppy?" I asked with a raised eyebrow. Roxy and Riley both gave a curt nod. I looked between the two. They could probably kill a plant in a week. The poor puppy wouldn't last a day. I was about to say no way but of course, I looked into their eyes which were full of hope and excitement. I tried to say no way, I really did but instead, two other words left my mouth. "Dang it," I muttered under my breath.

"So that's a yes?" Roxy asked. If you couldn't tell by now Roxy was the talker. Riley was amazing at just smiling and listening to her talk.

"I suppose," I said standing up. The two smiled and ran off. I laughed shaking my head. I wanted to be annoyed but I couldn't. I picked up my book and walked into my father's office. He was hard at work on the computer as he dark brown eyes squinted behind his reading glasses. He moved his hand throw his dark brown hair letting out a frustrated breath.

I looked over at a picture that hung on the wall. It was my mom and dad, both with the biggest smiles in the world on their faces.

My parents were the two most beautiful people in the world. My brother and sister complemented from them greatly. They had the thick dark brown hair with red highlights, my brother with dark brown eyes from my father and my sister with bright green eyes from my mother and both have a beautiful tan all year around.

Me? Well, I've asked my father that question for years. I loved my hair, which was a fawn brown, but it was super straight and my skin was pail no matter how long I lay in the sun. My eyes however I loved. They were the hazel and the perfect mix of green and brown. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I got a lot more from my mother then my father. Maybe she was actually paler then she looked in the picture, maybe her hair was super straight.

Not that I would ever get the chance to ask. My mother died two years after giving birth to the twins. A drunk driver came on her side of the road and hit her head on. It about destroyed my father and half the time I think he only pulled forward for the twins and me. He was doing better, much better but he was still healing.

I knocked on the wooden doorframe with a smile. My dad looked up and a smile light up his face. "What's up Pumpkin?" He asked sitting back in his chair. The sun shined in from the window seeming to light up the red in his hair, making him look younger than he actually was.

"I was attacked," I said sitting down in the brown leather seat in his office. His laugh filled the office and I smiled. He rarely laughed anymore.

"Let me guess, operation puppy?" He asked taking off his reading glasses.

"Oh yeah," I said. My dad laughed shaking his head. I looked at the stuff on his desk and frowned. Looks like another traveling trip. "So where are you off to this time?" I asked with a smile.

"Alabama," He said.

"Fun," I said back. He smiled.

"I'm doing nothing but meetings all day," He ground. I smiled sadly. "But I should be back in time for Twins Day," He said.

"With or without the puppy?" I asked. He gave me a look while fighting a smile.

"No puppy," My dad said. I understood his reasoning but I knew the twins would be crushed. "Maybe when they're a bit older and can keep a fish alive," My dad muttered. I nodded.

A week later it was late at night but I was up making sure everything was ready for Twins Day which was the very next day. The front door opened and I listened. "Pumpkin? You up?" My father's voice came around the corner.

"In the kitchen," I said. I looked throw counting all the goodie bags for the party when I heard someone clear their throat. I turned around but froze. Beside my dad was a woman around his age with short blond hair, green eyes, and a light skin tone. "Um... hi?" I said. It came out more like a question than a statement. I looked at my father who had his hand intertwined with hers.

"Isabella, I would like you to meet Gina, my girlfriend," He said.

"Girlfriend?" I asked to shocked to do anything more. My dad nodded as him and Gina looked into each other's eyes. I shake my head and blink a few times. Maybe this is a dream, a bad one, and I haven't woken up yet. Maybe I heard him wrong. "Girlfriend?" I asked again. My father looked at me and finally seems to notice the look on my face.

"Um... Sweetie, why don't you go sit in the family room?" My dad said. Gina nodded, her golden blond hair bouncing back and forth.

"Oh, nice to meet you, Isabella," She said with a bright smile. I nodded a bit. She walked into the family room, her white heels clicking happily. I looked at my father.

"So what do you think..."

"Office now!" I said not giving him the chance to finish. I was pacing by the time he got into the office. "Who is she?" I asked.

"Gina Strike, I meet her in Alabama and she was just amazing," My dad sighed. Not an annoyed or sad sigh either. It was a dreamy, happy sigh. Really? I'm about to flip out and he is sighing like a teenage boy in love.

"Dad you know I want you to be happy but you just met her and to bring her here when the twins have their birthday tomorrow!" I said. What was he thinking? I knew the twins and they would freak.

"Isabella there's more so wait to freak out on me," My father said. I looked at him and waited. "Were also moving to Alabama," He said and I blinked. Just blinked. I slide down in the chair. "Isabella?" Dad asked.

"Breath," I whispered to myself. "Breath," I whispered again. "Okay," I whispered after a few minutes. "First just tell me the game plan and then I'll react."

"Well we were going to let you guys finished the school year which is three more months and we were thinking a small courthouse wedding," He said.

"But dad you just met her," I said getting frustrated.

"Now Isabella, I know you miss your mom but..."

"This has nothing to do with mom!" I yelled standing up. "You just met her and now you're talking about marriage," I said.

"Sometimes you just know Isabella," He said. I sighed. I wasn't going to win this argument and I knew it.

"Okay," I said.
