During a bushfire, if you are trapped and/or can't drive out the flames, whatever you do, DO NOT hide in a drain or under your car. This is because the smoke will gather there and you will die from smoke inhalation.
The best thing to do is, is drive out the fire as much as possible. If it's catching up, move to the middle of the car, and cover yourself with blankets and/or towels. If you have neither, do the best you can and try not to touch the sides of the car. I'm not sure how effective this is, but I did hear that it is one way to [try to] survive.
