Leaving day is finally here. It takes effort to try to shrug off feelings, Adrian has discovered, especially when the thing causing those feeling is so persistant. The last few days has just been Lazarus trying to talk to and get close to Adrian and it exhausted both the boys.
St. John's starts a couple days earlier than Hogwarts so Adrian's family is off to go home and prepare for the rest of the school year. So for Adrian this day is the last day he will see Lazarus for a while, until the 3rd of December.
Even though he doesn't show it Adrian misses talking to Lazarus, and cuddling, and being touchy-feely with him. Adrian has made up his mind to apologise to Lazarus through letter when they get back to school, when he is sure how he feels about Lazarus.
Not being near a Veela means you can't feel the effects of them, Adrian has deduced form his little research. But he can't be alone for long when Lazarus is actively trying seek out Adrian's company.
Lazarus steps into his where Adrian is packing the last of his belongings, it's almost guaranteed that he would forget something, Adrian always does (usually clothes). But neither boy minds because Lazarus claims it as his own and wears the over sized shirt, jumper, tracksuit pants, ect. and Adrian likes to see him wear the too big clothes.
This time though Adrian purposelessly left something, his school scarf. Because it is a faded black and black is one of the Hufflepuff colours so hopefully Lazarus can wear it inconspicuously without getting in trouble.
"Hey," Adrian forgot about Lazarus being in the room so he jumped a little when the other boy spoke up, "um, you're leaving today."
"Yes I am." Adrian responds quietly. The last thing to go into the suitcase is the pen that Lazarus got his for Christmas. Adrian tucks the pen into a small pocket in the suitcase so he doesn't lose it amongst his other belongings.
"I just wanted to ask, why?" He didn't even have to explain, Adrian knew, he could see it on his face whenever he moved away from Lazarus when they were eating or turned to Daria when it was three of them in the sitting room.
"I- I can't say right now."
"Why not? don't you think I deserve an explanation why my best friend all of a sudden hated me?" Lazarus' voice getting more passionate as the question went on.
"You do, but I need time-"
"Oh time for what? To think about me being a monster, a beast?"
"What makes you think that you are either of those things?"
"My whole life I was treated differently, you were the only one that treat me normal. When I told the kids at school in first year all they wanted to do was poke and prod at me. Veela's are found in the book 'Magical Beasts and where to find them'. But the thing that makes me feel the worst is you treating me like some creature that people should be weary of and not a human being."
By the end of the rant tears streaked Lazarus' face and hs voice shook. This is the most human that Lazarus has ever looked (besides the fact that his tears are a little shinier than a muggle or wizards). Adrian's stern face broke.
"You what I think a beast is?" Lazarus looks up at the taller boy who looks saddened. "A bear." This makes a small chuckle come out of Lazarus' white lips. All of a sudden Adrian grabs Lazarus' smaller hand.
"I wouldn't hold the hand of a beast, a bear. I guess you're not a beast then, oh well." With that Lazarus jumps into Adrian's arms lifting his feet off the ground, letting Adrian hold his weight. Lazarus cries into Adrian's shoulder as Adrian slowly lets the smaller boy down.
"Thank you." A whisper.
"Adrian! Downstairs!" Adrian's father calls for him. The two boys disconnect and Adrian turns back to the suit case which he picks up with one hand. The other hand quickly squeezes Lazarus', then Adrian heads straight to the door, going to meet up with his family.
Quick goodbyes are exchanged between Adrian and Lazarus' dad, everyone having said goodbye to each other already.
Lazarus grabs onto his mothers waist and Daria to their fathers and they dispparate away, home.
===
At least this is not the shortest chapter so far, although it is rather short. Adrian was less of a rude person is this chapter so that's good.
I've worked out dates for this book, it's set in 2004 (some of you probably weren't even alive then). Because Ginny is in the Holly Head Harpies in the 2000's so I figured 2004 is long enough for her to get a name for herself in the quidditch.
The next couple of chapters are going to be in the form of letters the boys send to one another during the school year and those will have the dates of when they're sent on there.
Thanks for reading, so far we have over 100 reads so that's pretty great.
