When I got home, Mom was sitting in the living room with a man. "What is he like your millionth boyfriend?" I thought. He was a redneck like Mom. He had a beer belly, he had a bottle of beer in his hand while talking to Mom. He wore overalls and big work boots and a baseball cap.
"Hi, baby."
"Hi, Mom."
Mom stood up, he stood up too.
"Jackie, I would like you to meet Bud, I've known him since school, middle school. He heard I was back in Tulsa and he decided to come for a visit. After me and your daddy's weddin', we moved to Kentucky."
He shook my hand.
I had no idea he was Mom's old friend. I thought he was "a boyfriend". Sorry Mom.
"Nice to meet you, youngin. You look just as pretty as your mother."
Mom, pretty? Hah! You wish you white trash bastard! She smoked for thirty years and it aged her like an apple. I have seen pictures of her when she was a kid about younger than me. She was cute with red hair and freckles. She started smoking as a teen, she went from Marilyn Monroe to Joan Crawford.
They were resuming their talk as I walked to my room.
I opened the drawer of my nightstand and got my teen magazine posters of The Monkees and a couple other teen idols. I'm not allowed to hang them up on the wall. Mom just doesn't accept me for who I am whatsoever.
