Excessive lizards

"What-" Sam started, disbelieving. "I thought you were dead! I- we - thought Lucifer killed you!"

Gabriel grinned enthusiastically and swaggered slightly.

"Aww, c'mon, you think 'lil 'ole luci could take me? Pssssh!" Gabriel's false bravado was starting to wear thin on Sam, and so he took a step forward.

"Gabriel," Sam said intently. "How are you still alive?"

Gabriel sighed.

"Honestly, kiddo? I have no idea. Maybe it was God. Maybe it was just a freak accident. But I figure, I'm back, the world didn't end, there's still sweets, and nothing else matters!"

Sam rolled his eyes at Gabriel and was about to reply when Dean cut him off.

"This is great and all, welcome back to the land of the living blah blah, but seriously, where's Cas?" Dean folded his arms and glared at Gabriel.

Gabriel shrugged.

"I sent him away. He was about to tell you who the demon was."

Dean stared at him incredulously. "Where did you send him?"

Gabriel shrugged. "He'll live, at any rate, and should be back in-" Gabriel checked his watch- "five, four, three, two, on-"

Castiel appeared suddenly and abruptly in front of Sherlock, who jumped back in shock. John - possibly the most qualified doctor in the room, though certainly not the only one - ran quickly to his side and rolled him over. Castiel's hands and feet were bound, and there was a long roll of duct tape over his mouth, but other than that he seemed fine - if a little angry.

Castiel hauled himself up - with the help of Dean and John (Dean had rushed to Castiel's side as well) and glowered at Gabriel.

Carefully Dean pulled off the duct tape and Castiel spoke.

"Was that extremely necessary, Gabriel?" Castiel's voice was cold, but not overly mad - perhaps he was used to Gabriel playing tricks on him, Sam sure as heck was.

Gabriel laughed lightly. "Aww c'mon Cassie, you liked it."

"I still think the lizards were excessive."

"I needed to make a point."

Sam raised an eyebrow and the angels quit their bickering.

"Gabriel," Castiel said. "We need to talk. Alone."

Gabriel sighed. He had known it was coming, had just wanted to delay it as long as he could.

"Sure Cassie," he said. "Let's talk."

Gabriel snapped his fingers and they both disappeared.

"So Castiel is literally an angel," John said again, still not quite grasping it - time travel, ok sure, whatever, but angels and demons?

Although, John had seen Castiel disappear and reappear. That other angel, Gabriel, had done it too. Maybe they were right.

Slowly, John accepted the idea of angels and demons being real.

Sherlock, however, had no such intention.

"It's not possible," he insisted. "These things just don't exist!"

Sam and Dean exchanged glances. Sometimes people took the news well, and sometimes they took it like Sherlock did. Either way, in the end they usually came around.

"Look, Sherlock, I understand, I really do. When I-" blah, blah. Dean tuned it out. Sam usually did the talking, he was more empathic and just generally nicer at explaining.

Dean wandered away from Sam and Sherlock and went over into the corner of the Tardis to sit down and think, running his hands through his hair.

A soft pitter patter of feet approached him and he looked up.

"No offence, Doc, but I really don't feel like talking right now."

The doctor sat down beside Dean and spoke softly.

"Something's bothering you, Dean, and talking about it usually helps. What's wrong?"

Dean slowly looked up. He wasn't really used to people talking to him like that - as if he was a proper, real, normal human being. Sure, Sam and Cas were better than he could have hoped, but they all expected him to be the tough, badass, macho Dean. It was refreshing to talk to someone who acted like his feelings mattered.

Not that Sam and Cas didn't, of course. Castiel was usually fairly respectful towards Dean, and of course Sam was too.

Cas...

Dean realised that the Doctor was waiting patiently for Dean to speak and he cleared his throat.

"I guess- I'm just...worried." He said finally.

"That's good, everyone worries, worry is normal, what are you worried about?"

"I- I guess-" Dean started. "I think I'm worried about this demon we're supposed to be fighting. I don't know if we can do it and-" Dean stopped talking as the Doctor cut in.

"Dean. What are you really, deep down worried about?" The doctor spoke softly, looking straight at Dean, his eyes questioning.

"I think- um- I think I'm worried about Cas. I mean, he's all alone and-" the Doctor laughed and Dean stopped his rambling.

"Progress," the Doctor said, clapping his hands. "Now, you're worried for Cas, but not yourself? Not even Sam?"

"Well," Dean started, "Cas isn't with us, so I don't know what's going on with him. I guess I'm just hoping he's okay."

The doctor nodded like he understood perfectly - which, Dean thought, he probably did. The guy had obviously been through more than he let on. He was also probably way older than he looked, too, and would have just about seen it all.

"Well," Dean said uncomfortably - he just realised that he had been talking about his feelings with another guy, like some dewy-eyes schoolgirl - "I think we should probably get everyone together, maybe swap stories and experiences? Find out what we know. Y'know. Just an idea."

The doctor jumped to his feet. "A STORY SWAP!" He looked far too excited. "I LOVE story swaps! Story swaps...are cool." And with that, the doctor pranced away to 'round everyone up' for their great 'story swap.'

Great.

Just great.
