"I'm sorry I forgot," I apologised as we walked through Tom's front door.
"It's cool," he shrugged.
"Tom! Oh, and you brought a friend home too!" Tom's mother called from the kitchen.
"Hi Miss Carter," I smiled at her.
"Hi Katie! Haven't you grown? Oh, you're so tall now!" she fussed over me.
"Mum, stop it," Tom glowered at her.
She remained unfazed. "I'll bring some snacks up to you!"
He ignored her and dragged me up the stairs to his room. I plonked myself down in his desk chair and surveyed his room. "Tom, you bothered to tidy up. I'm impressed!"
"Don't get used to it!" he joked.
I got my books out my bag and spread them out on the floor. "Okay then," I flicked to the appropriate page, "where do we start?"
"We have to do a presentation on one of the topics on that page. I think we should do one on the differences between male and female minds. Don't you know a bit about that already?"
I sat up straighter. "Oh yes - but I only know the basics."
"Well, that's a start," he smiled. "We can look for more information on the internet, or in the textbook."
We researched in silence for a few minutes. The information in the textbook was limited, so I turned to Tom.
"You found anything good on the internet?" I asked.
"Yeah, there's one good site - come look," he gestured to the spot beside him.
I sat on the edge of his bed and looked at the website. "Oh, that will be useful. If we reworded some of the information and put it together with a nice video, then we could-"
"Can we do something else now?" he interrupted me.
"Um," I said, "we could do the maths homework."
"I didn't mean anything school related, Katie," he said.
"Well, what then?" I felt confused.
"I've been planning this for ages now," he started.
"What? The project?"
"Katie, forget homework for a second," he sighed. "Look, I've been planning this for ages, but I've always chickened out."
"What are you talking about?" I asked impatiently.
"Don't talk. Just close your eyes," he instructed.
"Why?"
"So I can do this."
And then he brought his lips down on mine.
