"Did you hear?" Natalie, the school gossip, said to me in Geography.
"What?" I whispered, glancing anxiously at Miss Lily. I'd been bored out my skull of all of Geography, because Poppy was ill, so I needed to have a conversation with someone but Miss Lily was keeping a watchful eye on me.
"Tom Carter kissed Katie Summers!" she exclaimed gleefully.
"No way!" I said.
"It's so weird. They were best friends, and then BAM - he kissed her!"
"I thought they didn't like each other that way," I said.
"Oh, she doesn't like him," Natalie assured me. "The feeling isn't mutual."
"Well, what did she do?" I asked.
"Apparently she slapped him, then walked out!" she confirmed.
"Girls, be quiet at the back!" Miss Lily scolded us.
"Sorry miss," I said to her, then turned back to Natalie. "What happened next?"
"They're not on speaking terms any more. She's ignoring him. Isn't that tragic?"
"Poor Tom," I frowned.
Natalie waggled her eyebrows. "Maybe he wants someone to comfort him in his hour of need."
"I can't believe she turned him down." For some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about Tom - the poor guy. He was nice and cute - who would turn him down?
"Yes, yes - well, her loss," Natalie said impatiently. "Anyway, do you think you're going to ask him out?"
"I'm not sure," I mused. "Maybe."
"Well you'd better be quick," she advised, "because I bet half the year are going to be after him now they know he's interested in dating."
"Thanks," I said as she turned away.
I went to find Katie after the bell rang and pulled her into the locker room. "Are you nuts?"
"What are you talking about?" she couldn't meet my gaze.
"Tom, obviously! Did you really slap him?"
I took her silence as a yes.
"Katie! That's so mean!"
"Well, what was I supposed to do?" she said.
"You could have kissed him back!" I said it like it was obvious - which it was.
"That's gross. Tom's like my brother. Anyway, that would have been leading him on," she pointed out.
"Ok, fair enough, but you could have reacted better. Who are you going to hang out with now?" I retorted.
"This is why I don't like hanging out with girls, or dating boys. There's just too much drama. And I can cope perfectly well on my own, thank you," she said before storming off.
If only Poppy was here. She would have know how to handle it. Instead, me and my big mouth went and screwed it up, as per usual.
Great.
This was just great.
