Chapter Eight

-The Kitchen-

Nichole's POV:

The big smile spread across my face wouldn't seem to disappear. He was all I could think about, his enticing pink lips. I wish I could go back in time and taken that dare to kiss him. I picked up the white bag of goldfish crackers off of the island and started to make my way to the stairs.

I began jogging but halted in between steps when I felt my phone vibrate in the side pocket of my black sweatpants.

Lia: Hey how's North Carolina?? I miss my movie buddy :(

Nichole: soo much fun! I miss you too. How's San Fran?

Lia: it's actually been pretty cloudy lately

Nichole: oh that's never fun, when do you get back?

Lia: on Friday wbu?

Nichole: late Sunday afternoon

I looked up from my screen and saw Maggie walking across the hallway with her laptop resting on top of her forearms.

"Hey." She said, her black wavy hair in a tight bun. She was wearing an old gray dance t-shirt that wrote 'Herndon' in big red letters across the chest and black sweatpants that had been rolled up on the hips, exposing a sliver of her tan stomach.

"Hey almost birthday girl!" I said slipping my cold fists into my warm fuzzy pockets. "Two more days right?"

She looked up from her bright screen and nodded in response.

"So do you have any plans for the big day?" I asked.

"No not really. I just want a red velvet cake." She replied with a big grin.

"Hahah I think we can make that happen." I responded and began to restart my walk downstairs when Maggie asked me, "What did you guys end up doing today?"

"Ohh we just messed around on the wave runner." I replied as I set down the bag of goldfish on the carpet, so I could push my tangled hair into a high ponytail.

"Do you know what we are having for dinner?" She questioned me, closing her black laptop and resting it aside her hip.

"I think Sue is going to make some tacos, but I'm not sure." I stated with a shoulder shrug.

"Okay, well text me when you find out." Maggie replied as I picked up the bag and continued on walking.

...

I finally made my way to the bottom floor and slowly rolled aside the glass sliding door. I stepped out of the chilled sand room and onto the faded brown mat, that had a big black cursive H directly in the center.

The sun was just on the verge of disappearing behind the tall green trees and some sun rays had trickled through the thin branches, reflecting golds squiggles off of the flat quiet lake. And the crickets were super loud with their chirping.

I walked down the concrete path to the towering white gate and unlocked the tiny metal latch. As I strolled down the short stack of old stairs, a faint squeak slipped out with every step. I walked down to the head of the dock where the majority of my cousins were. I love being with my cousins, we're all in a four year age range, so its always a blast when we're together. Before sitting back down, I felt my phone vibrate once again in my pocket, I whipped it out expecting it to be Lia but it was my Aunt Gina.

Auntie G: Sue said that dinner will be ready in 30 minutes. Please tell the kids to get ready.

Nichole: sure thing :)
