I pulled up to Trevor's apartment the next day to pick him up for our date at the beach when my cellphone started to ring.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Keri, I don't think I can do this..." He said, breathing heavily.
"Trevor?" I asked him, "What do you mean that you don't think you can do this?"
"Keri, you are so fun and upbeat... and a beautiful person. I'm just gonna drag you down. Think about it: Every time we go out, you will have to pick me up and drive me to wherever we are going. You'll have to help navigate me through crowds and constantly describe to me what's going on. You are gonna get frustrated with me. Everyone gets frustrated with me."
The tone of his voice sounded... off. He sounded like he was crying. I wondered if it was even possible for him to cry, given the fact that his eyes were removed. I was just so confused. I could not believe that he was doing this to me. I wasn't ready for my first breakup.
"Trevor, why are you saying this?! Every time that I am around you, I am instantly happy. The fact that you are blind doesn't change how I feel about you. Please, Trevor, don't do this..."
"I'm sorry..." He hung up his phone.
I sat there in my car, stunned and broken-hearted. His words came out of nowhere. I had expected a fun day at the beach with him. What made him change his mind about me in the last twenty-four hours? I had to find out. Something just didn't feel right.
I got out of my car and walked up to his apartment building. I looked at the names next to the buzzer. There was one name that had raised dots underneath in Braille. I knew that apartment had to be Trevor's. I pushed his buzzer and hoped that he would answer.
"Who is it?" He asked over the intercom.
"You know damn well who this is, Forsythe! You aren't letting me go that easy!" I yelled at him.
Then I heard a buzzing of the door and it unlocked. I opened it and walked on in and up two floors to his apartment.
The door was partially open and it looked like the lock was busted. I opened it all the way to see a total disaster inside his apartment. It looked as if somebody had broken into it and ransacked it completely. I shook as I stepped over a shattered lamp on the floor.
"Trevor?" I asked.
"Keri, I'm over here," I walked over to see him sitting in his kitchen covered in blood and bruises. His clothes were torn and tattered and his Ray Ban sunglasses that Lucy had gotten him for his birthday laid smashed into pieces on the floor. His orbital implants were visible with no prosthetic eyes to cover them. The whole sight of him had me completely shaken.
"Oh my God! Trevor!" I rushed over to him.
"They came last night after I got home from the hospital... They broke in again, beat me up, and left me here to die. I wish I did."
"No, no, no... Trevor, don't say that!" I said, grabbing a towel for his head to wipe off some of the blood on his forehead. "You mean to tell me that they have done this before? Who in the world would do such a thing?!"
"I don't know. Somebody that knows that I'm blind. I'm an easy target."
"Trevor, you have to call the cops! And we need to get you to a hospital!"
"No, Keri! I'll be okay. The cops have come and gone already and a medic has already assessed me. It's just a couple of bruises. Just go home. We'll talk about everything later."
"Let me at least help you clean up the place," I offered.
"Go home, Keri," He said sternly, "Lavender will be coming later to help clean and help me pack everything up. I'm moving back home. Even though I like my independence, it's probably better and safer for me."
"I think that's a wise decision... I'll leave, but, Trevor, did you mean everything that you said earlier?" I asked.
"No." He shook his head, "I am sorry for what I said. I don't want to lose you. But I am a liability to you and you need to know that. You have such a perfect simple life and mine is so complicated and fucked up. When I'm with you, I forget about how messed up it really is. But right now, I am in a lot of pain and I didn't sleep last night because of what happened. So just let me be."
"Let me at least help you to your bed. I don't want you to trip and fall over all of this mess."
"Fine." He grunted, "Also, are my sunglasses that Lucy bought me anywhere? I must look like a freak to you right now."
"You don't look like a freak. Unfortunately, the person who robbed you kind of destroyed them." I picked the Ray Bans up off the floor and put them in his hands.
"Damn it!" He said through his teeth. He gripped them tightly and sighed.
"I'm sorry," I tried to comfort him.
"You didn't do this. There's no need for you to apologize. Just show me to my room, please."
I helped him up out of the kitchen chair. He grabbed his ribs tightly as we walked. The person who attacked him must have hurt him there. I felt so bad for him. The thought of somebody hurting Trevor made me sick to my stomach.
When we got to his bedroom, he removed his torn shirt and laid down on his bed. A large bruise was forming on his rib cage. I covered him with a blanket and brought him some ice for his injury.
After getting him settled in his bed, I went back in the living room and pushed the couch to block the front door so that nobody could break in. Lord knows he didn't need anybody to break in again.
"I'm gonna stay here until Lavender comes. I'll wait in the living room so you can sleep." I said, on my way out of his bedroom.
"Keri, you don't have to leave," he said, "Lay here with me... Please?"
He was like a child in that moment, scared of the world and what it might do to him. I couldn't leave his side.
I got in bed and spooned myself next to him, my arm draping over his body. Our bodies melted together as we both fell fast asleep.
