The next day, I felt completely and utterly drained. I didn't even want to go open the shop that morning. I laid in my bed, tossing and turning all night into the wee hours of morning. When I finally did fall asleep, Jingles insisted that I get up and start my day. He pawed at my face until I finally got up out of my bed. I threw my pink hair in a messy bun and reluctantly went to go open the shop.
Knowing that there was somebody loose on the streets that was out to harm Trevor made me ill to even think about. Violence in Chicago had risen to an all-time high. Every time that I turned on the news, there was a story about somebody getting shot and killed on the city streets. It saddened me to hear stories of the Dan Ryan getting shut down due to shootings. I feared for Trevor's life. He was just an innocent blind man who had a passion for music and craved his independence. Why would somebody want to hurt him and destroy the world that he built? I could not figure it out for the life of me. Unless, there was more to Trevor's story that he had not told me.
I decided that no matter what chaos occurred with repairs at the shop that Monday, I was not going to call Trevor to come in. I knew that his family was probably moving all of his things- or what was left of it after most of it was destroyed- back to his foster parents' house. I didn't want to interrupt them, because I knew that he was probably busy with that. Plus, I was sure that he was probably still hurting from the day before and probably would for a while.
When I final arrived at Corner, I was shocked to find that the front door was unlocked. I could have sworn that I had locked up the shop on my way out the door on Friday.
I took a look around. Everything was still in its place.
"Hello?" I called out, "Anybody here?"
I heard footsteps coming from the back of the shop. I held onto the doorknob tightly, ready to make a quick dash out of the shop if need be.
"Did ya miss me?!" My brother Franky appeared from around a corner.
"Oh my God! You almost gave me a heart attack! I thought that maybe somebody had broken in!"
"Jeez! Calm ya jets, kid!" He spoke like a true Italian, "Why so paranoid?!"
"I, I just assumed the worst, I guess... How was Italy?"
"Beautiful, but boring. Nothing that I haven't already seen. That's why I came back early. But I did meet this Italian chick out there. Couldn't understand a word she said, but she had nice tits!"
"Oh, Lord!" I rolled my eyes at him. Why did he have to come home? Ugh!
"So, how's the new guy working out? I see he has rearranged everything in my repair room. I'm not too happy about that."
"I rearranged it. You left it a mess when you left. Trevor can't see anything, so I wanted to make it easier for him to find the tools that he needs."
He gave me a funny look.
"Wait... What do you mean that he can't see anything? That's insane! It took me years to learn my craft and without my eyes, there's no way in hell I could do what I do without my vision."
"Well if you suddenly became blind, wouldn't you try to figure out a different way of doing your job?" I asked him.
"I suppose so," He shrugged.
"And not only can he fix any instrument that comes in here, he can play more instruments than you and Sis combined," I bragged.
"Well, I'll be damned! I'd like to meet this guy. Seems pretty interesting to me. Is he coming in today?"
I shook my head. "I am letting him have the day off. He is moving back home with his foster parents today because somebody broke into his apartment and attacked him. I'm kind of afraid for him, Franky. And this isn't the first time it has happened either. Finding him in such bad shape yesterday has really shaken me up. I didn't even want to leave him in that condition last night."
"You seem oddly protective of him. Almost like... you are dating him! Is he the guy that you stole the guitar for? You know Dad almost had a heart attack over that, right?"
"I am aware. He gave me a piece of his mind over it. But, yes, we are dating. We aren't official yet, though."
"The guy sounds like he has some issues. You better be careful, Sis. I don't want you getting involved with some guy that's gonna hurt you in the end or risk your safety."
I sighed. I was so helplessly falling for Trevor when all of this happened. What if something bad happened to me? How could he protect me when he could barely protect himself because of his lack of sight? I felt awful for even thinking that way, but I couldn't ignore the thought.
"I'll be careful, Franky. I need to talk to him though and figure out who would deliberately try to harm him. I think there is more to Trevor than meets the eye, so to speak."
"You're a smart kid. You'll figure it out. If it doesn't work out, then it doesn't work out! You can always move to the Jersey Shore and marry some buff Italian guido. At least he will be able to protect you," He joked.
"No Italian guidos for me, Bro!"
"Why? Does 'gym, tan, laundry' not appeal to you?" He winked at me.
I laughed. The one thing about my brother is that he always makes me giggle when I'm feeling down. He has that way about him.
"I'm glad that you're home," I admitted to him.
He patted me on the shoulder. "I got your back, Sis! I ain't gonna let anything bad happen to you."
