He emerged from his home, the fresh, cool night air filled his nostrils. How he loved the night. It was silent, yet humming with life.
From his position, he need not fear any mob, for they would fear him. He didn't know why, it was just like a natural response for them. When he was within a ten block radius, they would go stiff, look at him, then run like they had a ghost chasing them.
His pure silver eyes scanned his surroundings, no people, which means no imminent danger. Good.
He pulled his black hood over his eyes, concealing his features, allowing him to blend in entirely in the night.
The first few days of his escape had been horrible. Looking over his shoulder every time he heard a sound, for fear his father would come searching for him and find him. How he hated him.
Everything used to be fine, until his father decided to give him a test. He sent him away to a remote place, and told him to stay put, promising that he would return the next day.
Somehow, Rin didn't stay put. He ran from his father, running far, far away, glad to be freed from him at last.
His father had expected a perfect child, like his freaking perfect self. Instead, Rin had been born in a way that was utterly different from what his father had expected, even with powers that his father loathed. But he knew the truth, his father was afraid of his powers.
His father had always been a control freak, and wanted Rin to be like himself, perfect in every single way, but he wasn't. His father forced him to do better than his peers by his standards, which were impossibly high, dangling just out of his reach, as if mocking him, taunting him.
He was always like the opposite of his father, his father was all about light and goodness, but he was all about the darkness and night.
He had been on the run for so long, fleeing from dimension to dimension to escape his father. Even though, he wasn't surprised that his father gave up so easily. His father could always claim he never existed, after all, he never liked him.
After so many years, his father finally gave up trying to find him, and that very fact was able to make him glad for. His father didn't really care about him, he just needed to put on a front to everybody that he is the perfect guy, the perfect king, the perfect husband, the perfect father. And people believed him. Idiots. Or that they respected his so called awesome powers that he just seemed like a god to them, perfect in every freaking way.
Unlike his father's or anyone's he ever knew, he always found his own powers intriguing, somehow similar than Null's, but much more powerful. Rin had the power to bend the night itself to his will, something that his father never even dreamed of. That's how he had fooled his father and managed to escape. By projecting a silhouette of himself, he pretended to have stayed put, but in reality, the silhouette bought him precious time he needed to escape and run towards his freedom.
Not only that, he could also manipulate the darkness itself, and could manipulate it into a physical form. Nothing could threaten him in the night, that is his domain, he is the overlord.
He paused mid stride, having sensed something. He motioned his hand ever so slightly, and a grunt indicated he had hit his mark, pinning the person to a tree. Without turning around, he said," My father didn't send you, did he not?"
"No," a light chuckle, "no he did not."
Rin turned around, to find his victim, his stalker, pinned to a tree, two jagged blades of darkness in an x shape, like a pair of scissors threatening to bite into the flesh of the man's neck.
The man, however, seemed unfazed, he laughed, instead, although carefully staying away from the blades' edge," I am impressed. You are really as powerful as they say."
Rin didn't speak, just turned around and stared coldly at the man. Preparing to launch another weapon at him if he made another threatening move.
"Few know of your existence," the man continued," and even fewer know of your powers. Really, this is extraordinary."
"You didn't stalk me for a few days just to praise me," Rin sneered," speak, what are you here for?"
"If you were more powerful, your father wouldn't even be alive by now," the man said," but I say, you just don't have the guts to kill him."
A third blade appeared in the thin air, hovering, pointing right between his eyes.
"I would speak my next words very carefully if I were you," Rin snarled.
"That is why you killed your mother, right?" The man kept speaking, ignoring his threat," to show your father your resolve. Your strength. To let him know you would do anything to make him suffer."
Rin didn't speak, but a silent rage roared inside him as the third blade flew forward. Thunk, it hit the tree trunk.
But he could never forget that cold voice's last words," Nasty temper you got there, Midnight King. But don't worry, I will find a way to put it to use. I just need a way to fan that spark, eh?"
